BASIC FUNCTION:
Support the faculty and the Principal Investigator in conducting laboratory experiments focused on characterizing interactions between Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) and human host cells.

Dr. Karl M Thompson, Ph.D. – Associate Professor and Principal Investigator
NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position offers hands-on research experience in a biomedical laboratory setting, suitable for undergraduate or early-stage graduate students pursuing studies in microbiology, cell biology, or a related field. The role involves working under direct supervision while performing critical laboratory tasks that contribute to ongoing research projects.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Cultivation and maintenance of C. acnes bacterial cultures.
- Culture and maintenance of human cell lines.
- Co-incubation of C. acnes with human cells.
- Preparation and maintenance of microbiological growth media.
- Daily upkeep and organization of laboratory workspace.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
- Proficiency in mammalian cell culture techniques.
- Basic microbiological techniques, including bacterial culture and media preparation.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and organization.
- Experience operating within an anaerobic chamber.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols precisely.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree - or enrolled in a graduate program in a relevant scientific discipline. Previous laboratory experience preferred. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
