Clinical Decision Unit

Clinical Decision Unit is the newest addition to emergency services at Denver Health. It is a clinical pathway driven short stay unit, that specializes in caring for patients who have been initially evaluated in the emergency department. Average lengths of stay are between 8-16 hours, and care is provided by a multidisciplinary team that delivers ongoing medical treatments, assessments and dispositions of patients in this area. It is a team-based environment; that allows nurses to practice autonomy while caring for complex patients. It is perfect for nurses seeking a transition between the emergent and inpatient worlds. Nursing ratios are 1:5, with healthcare techs at a 1:8 ratio on days.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of an RN, performs basic patient care activities. The Nursing Apprentice II role provides an opportunity for students that have graduated from a nursing program to enhance clinical skills in a hospital environment when applying for licensure/registration to the Nursing Regulatory Body to take the NCLEX Examination. The Nursing Apprentice II adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of professional nursing and performance, and the ANA Code of Ethics (2015) to provide care to all patients. Utilizes the Theory of Human Caring and Caritas in daily practice. "Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, Founder / Director, Watson Caring Science Institute

Essential Functions:
  • Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including but not limited to, monitoring vital (25%)
  • Signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output. (10%)
  • Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including but not limited to, bathing, grooming and eating. (10%)
  • Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to nursing staff. (10%)
  • Assists with keeping unit(s) and patient rooms stocked, clean, and orderly. (10%)
  • Develop specific clinical nurse skills through observation of experts and supervised, hands-on experience. (10%)
  • Documentation that complies with clinical guidelines. (10%)
  • Partners with interprofessional team on healthcare consumer throughput by proactively solving problems related to capacity and healthcare consumer flow. (10%)
  • Collaborates with interprofessional teams to incorporate Lean principles for quality improvement initiatives. (5%)

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED Must be within 6 months of passing the NCLEX exam Required

Work Experience:
  • less than 1 year related experience Required

Licenses:
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient’s care.
  • Ability to ensure all duties, responsibilities and competencies are conducted in a manner that is effective and appropriate to patients/clients to who care/service is being provided.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and applicability of the principles of growth and development over the life span, as well as demonstrating the ability to assess data reflecting the patient’s status and interpreting appropriate cultural information of the patient(s) to whom care/ services is being delivered/provided.
  • Ability to complete and maintain clinical competency standards
  • EHR Documentation preferred.
