Purpose of Position
The Medical Technologist (MT) performs functions of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care on assigned patients under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor. The MT involves the patient and significant other(s) in the patient’s health restoration, promotion, and maintenance. The MT is responsible for performing according to established standards of laboratory practice and the University of North Dakota (UND), UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences, and the Center for Family Medicine policies/procedures. The MT utilizes established lines of authority and communication to provide care to patients.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Collection and performance of laboratory tests for a moderately complex laboratory
- Confirm patient using two identifiers.
- Explain and instruct patient on the collection of specimens.
- Perform specimen collection, analysis, and interpretation of diagnostic tests.
- Recognize acceptable and unacceptable samples, while processing specimens for analysis.
- Perform and report waived and moderately complex testing process according to standard operating procedures.
- Complete testing within the designated turnaround time.
- Correlate lab data with clinical states and patient information.
- Laboratory testing includes Chemistry, Urinalysis (Chemical and Microscopic analysis), Serology, Hematology, Microbiology, and Molecular testing.
- Follow Laboratory Standard Operating procedures for keeping all laboratory documentation.
- Process all Laboratory referral specimens appropriately.
- Maintain appropriate logs and documentation of specimens and results.
- Provide collaboration and communication with medical providers
- Provide consultation with medical staff regarding correlation of pathological symptoms and laboratory testing to aid in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific problems. Exercise initiative and independent judgment regarding support to medical staff.
- Recognize appropriate test selection, validity of test results, deviations of and causes of discrepant test results, and need for additional tests.
- Communicate critical/urgent values to appropriate provider.
- Quality assessment, quality control, instrumentation, and proficiency testing
- Perform Quality Control testing and maintenance procedures to ensure reliability and accuracy of testing results. Identify, interpret, and troubleshoot out of range test results. Implement corrective action and documentation when necessary.
- Operate and perform quality assessment on LIS/Electronic Health Record.
- Document all repairs, maintenance, quality control, Calibrations, and quality assessment results.
- Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain equipment and instruments.
- Verify accuracy of all instrumentation using established procedures and quality control testing.
- Perform proficiency testing.
- Maintain current knowledge of standards to maintain the laboratory's accreditation
Required Competencies
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work closely with faculty and resident physicians
- Must be able to work with patients and the public in a professional, confidential, and calm fashion
- Computer entry experience, familiarity with general office machines, attention to detail.
- Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and be able to motivate other personnel
- Must promote a team environment
- Must be willing to learn about and become proficient with EKG, audiogram and pulmonary function test
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Clinical Laboratory Science degree
- Requires a minimum of MT or CLS licensure in the State of North Dakota
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
