Staff Research Associate III

Position Definition: 

The incumbent will assist the Principal Investigator in coordinating and conducting research activities related to the development and implementation of an educational toolkit that will facilitate genetic risk assessment and management by healthcare providers. The incumbent will join an interdisciplinary research team working in health services and implementation research at the San Francisco VA Health Care System and the University of California, San Francisco. The incumbent will be provided training to acquire skills and knowledge of professional concepts in health services and implementation research and germline genetic testing.

Essential Functions:

• Under the direction of senior researchers, participate in the design of a research plan, implement research procedures, and analyze results.
• Collaborate in the development of interview protocols.
• Assist with participant recruitment, including identifying potential participants who have undergone germline genetic testing by searching VA databases.
• Contact potential participants by email, telephone, or post inviting them to be interviewed.
• Work with the team to schedule interviews.
• Participate in semi-structured participant interviews or focus groups.
• Conduct quality assurance on interview transcripts.
• Assist in creating PowerPoint presentations and research posters.
• Assist in qualitative data analyses.
• Conduct literature searches using PubMed and other internet search engines.
• Assist with photocopying, faxing, mailing (Fed Ex, UPS, US Mail, etc.).
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor's Degree in an associated field, preferred: Master’s Degree in genetics-related field.
• Preferred: 1-2 Years of research experience.
• Preferred: Genetic counseling experience.
• Good organizational and computer literacy with full working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and the Internet.
• Self-motivated.
• Ability to effectively manage time, tasks, priorities and see assigned parts of projects through to completion on deadline.
• Comfort recruiting, interviewing, and talking with participants.
• Ability to exercise tact and discretion in handling a variety of confidential material.
• Skilled in verbal and written communication.
• Adherence to data security and HIPAA requirements.
• Strong accuracy and attention to detail.

Working Conditions/Environment:

The work environment for this position is in a hospital research office. It may include some minor annoyances such as noise, temperature variations, etc. The incumbent may sustain posture in standing or seated position and may utilize a computer terminal for prolonged periods of time.

The base salary range for this position is $32.00 - $48.68 per hour. The base salary actually offered to a successful candidate will take into account various relevant and non-discriminatory business factors including, without limitation, the candidate’s geographic location, job-related experience, knowledge, and skills, and education, as well as internal equity considerations. A successful candidate may also be eligible to earn additional compensation including bonuses.
