Summary
The Housing Specialist plays a key role in the Veterans Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) team by supporting participants in locating, securing, and maintaining safe, affordable housing. This position provides direct housing navigation services to all clients assisting them in achieving housing stability through individualized service plans. The Housing Specialist also assists with processing and delivering shallow subsidy payments, coordinating directly with landlords and property managers, and conducting field-based housing inspections and wellness visits.
Key Responsibilities:
Housing Navigation & Placement

Assist clients in identifying suitable housing options and navigating the rental market.

Educate Veterans on tenant rights, lease agreements, and housing responsibilities.

Conduct housing search workshops and one-on-one coaching.

Support the Senior Housing Specialist with housing leads, landlord engagement, and housing events.

Deliver checks and documentation to landlords, as needed.

Conduct housing inspections to ensure units meet quality standards.
Landlord Engagement & Subsidy Coordination

Build and maintain relationships with landlords, property managers, and real estate agents.

Assist with the processing of shallow subsidy payments and related landlord communications.

Troubleshoot landlord-tenant concerns and escalate issues as needed.

Track payments and maintain logs of shallow subsidy delivery.
Compliance & Administrative Support

Complete all required documentation in accordance with VA and agency requirements.

Support grant and program compliance through timely, high-quality data entry and file maintenance.

Respond to client inquiries and landlord requests in a professional and timely manner.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, or related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

1–2 years of experience in housing services, case management, or property leasing.

Experience working with Veterans or people experiencing homelessness is preferred.

Ability to conduct frequent home visits and fieldwork (up to 60%).

Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation required.
Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

Strong knowledge of veteran-specific issues and homelessness.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple cases and priorities simultaneously.

Ability to collaborate effectively with community partners and external agencies.

Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Strong sense of empathy and accountability, with a passion for helping vulnerable populations.

Knowledge of local resources for veterans, including housing, employment, healthcare, and benefits programs.

Experience with Veteran populations and/or homeless services preferred.

Strong understanding of housing laws, Section 8/HUD-VASH programs, and Fair Housing standards.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with HMIS preferred.

Excellent organizational, communication, and negotiation skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
