Speech Pathology & Audiology Patient Service Aide- Summer internship

 

Program Summary:

 

The Summer Professional Speech Pathology/Audiology Assistant program at Duke Health is in its 17th year and was modeled after the Duke Nursing PNA program. The department of Speech Pathology & Audiology will be filling three summer student positions who meet the criteria noted below.

 

 

The program is designed to prepare undergraduate and first year graduate students to enter the speech pathology and audiology professions within the medical environment.  It is a mentored 10-week program designed to offer students the opportunity to:

 

•            Increase awareness of the scope of practice for medical speech pathology and audiology

•            Advance interest in and capacity for providing optimal patient care in a variety of clinical

settings and assorted diagnoses throughout the health system

•            Develop critical-thinking skills and profession al communication skills

 

The job title is Patient Service Aide. This is an hourly paid position(no benefits are offered) that will run from June 3, 2024 – August 9, 2024. The work schedule is a 40-hour work week, Monday – Friday (no weekends or holidays) and the hours would be roughly 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Participants are paid to learn while working scheduled weekly rotations, alternating between providing clerical support in our administrative offices and participating in mentored observations with clinicians in both inpatient and outpatient settings at the hospital and clinic.

 

The position is suitable for any under graduate or graduate student in a Speech, Audiology, Communication Sciences/Disorders or related program. Suitable candidates should be able to perform basic clerical skills (answer phones, filing, faxing, courier items between various locations, sort mail, data entry, etc.)and be able to assist with projects, such as working with clinicians to and have a professional presence. They should have good computer skills, help create educational materials, assisting with stocking supplies, and other duties as assigned. Ideal candidates are mature students who would require minimal supervision, can follow directions, and who have exceptional critical thinking skills.

Please note that there is no provision for housing. Students who are not local residents are responsible for independently obtaining their own housing for the summer.
