Job Description

Visa Research conducts both applied and fundamental research, aiming to push the boundaries of payment-related technologies on a global scale. We partner with Visa’s technology and product teams, global business units, academic institutions, and government agencies to explore and develop transformative technologies that will shape the future of payments and impact billions of people worldwide.

As a Principal Research Scientist in Quantum Information and Computation, you will play a pivotal role in defining and advancing Visa’s long-term research agenda in this field. You will lead high-impact research initiatives, mentor and develop both junior and senior scientists, and serve as a thought leader influencing Visa’s strategic direction. Your work will focus on pioneering quantum algorithms and computational models applicable to finance and payments — including areas such as portfolio optimization, risk analysis, and derivative pricing.

This role offers the opportunity to guide cutting-edge research from conception to implementation, foster collaborations across internal and external stakeholders, and represent Visa as a leader in the global quantum research community. The ideal candidate will be an established authority in the field, with a distinguished record of research contributions, demonstrated leadership in complex projects, and a passion for developing talent.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the formulation and execution of an ambitious, forward-looking research agenda in quantum information and computation, with emphasis on applications to finance and payments.

  • Design, analyze, and prototype novel quantum algorithms and computational models to advance the state-of-the-art.

  • Mentor and coach both junior and senior scientists, fostering technical excellence, innovation, and professional growth.

  • Drive multi-institution collaborations with academia, industry, and government research bodies.

  • Publish influential research in top-tier conferences and journals, and present work at leading scientific forums.

  • Engage with business and product leaders to translate research outcomes into strategic opportunities, influencing product and technology roadmaps.

  • Stay at the forefront of breakthroughs in quantum computing and related disciplines, assessing their potential impact on Visa’s business.

  • Cultivate strong relationships with the global quantum research community to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange.

  • Oversee project lifecycles, ensuring rigor, impact, and alignment with Visa’s long-term vision.

This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
•12 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or at least 10 years of work experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters/MBA /JD/MD), or a minimum of 5 years of work experience with a PhD.

Preferred Qualifications:
•15 or more years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or 12 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, or MD), PhD with 9+ years of experience
•PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
•7+ years of postdoctoral research experience in quantum computing or related domains.
•Internationally recognized research track record, evidenced by high-impact publications, patents, and contributions to the research community.
•Proven leadership in guiding large-scale, multi-institution research programs.
•Deep expertise in designing quantum computing solutions for financial or related applications.
•Proficiency in quantum programming environments such as Qiskit, Cirq, or equivalent platforms.
•Hands-on experience deploying and validating algorithms on quantum hardware.
•Demonstrated excellence in mentoring scientists at varying career stages.
