About the role

The Department of Exercise, Health and Sport Sciences at the University of Southern Maine is seeking part-time instructor applicants for the upcoming academic year.  Our Fall 2025 semester begins September 1, 2025.

Possible courses Include:

Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness (SPM 219) - The primary emphasis of this course is to introduce students to a variety of tools that can be used to assess health, physical fitness, and well being. If students aspire to a career in the health sciences, these tools can be used to assess individuals fitness and wellness as well as the fitness and wellness of others. Major topics will include nutrition/weight management, fitness training techniques, flexibility, coronary risk factor management, muscular strength/endurance, stress management, and other wellness-related topics. Class content will include readings, discussions, self-assessment activities and labs, and development of personalized nutrition and physical activity plans.

Introduction to Personal Training (SPM 260) - An overview of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed by fitness instructors to plan, implement, and evaluate safe and effective exercise programs. Emphasis is on exercise programs for individuals and groups.

Kinesiology (SPM 381) - Structural and functional anatomical analysis of human movement. Course will also incorporate principles of mechanics as they apply to the analysis of human movement.

Kinesiology Lab (SPM 382) - Lab component to Kinesiology.  

Biomechanics (SPM 390) - Evaluation, analysis, and application of anatomical and mechanical factors that influence human movement.

Biomechanics Lab (SPM 391) – Lab component to Biomechanics.  

Exercise Testing, Assessment, and Prescription (SPM 430) - This course focuses on knowledge and skills necessary for assessing health-related components of physical fitness. The course will also focus on prescription and design of programs to develop health-related fitness that will be applied in the laboratory setting.

We are seeking student-focused instructors who will be responsible for the full delivery and grading of the course. All Special Education programs are fully online with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous courses.  Synchronous sessions meet using the Zoom conferencing platform and meet in the late afternoons and evenings so that those currently working in schools can attend.  Responsibilities include developing the course, teaching, assessing student performance, and meeting with students as needed. The instructor will be provided with the course learning objectives, program competencies, and suggested topical outline and will be given a previous course syllabus available for reference.

The Department of Exercise, Health and Sport Sciences (EHSS) offers degrees in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Therapeutic Recreation, and Health Sciences. These innovative programs offer students the opportunity to gain clinical experience while using the most advanced athletic training and exercise science equipment available.  EHSS offers accredited, professional programs that provide a quality learning environment through content-rich curricula, student-faculty interactions, and active learning experiences to emphasize the application of knowledge.     

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience. Eligible part-time faculty members may elect certain benefits provided by the University of Maine System.  In addition, The Center for Academic Innovation provides learning design consulting and faculty development opportunities to help faculty to create engaging programs, courses and lesson plans grounded in evidence-based best practices for every modality.
