Group Leader – Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Group
Argonne National LaboratoryAbout the role
Argonne National Laboratory seeks a highly experienced and innovative researcher and group leader to lead our research efforts for the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen group. Maintain the highest level of competency in engineering modeling, analysis, and simulation of fuel cell and electrolyzer systems, on-board and large-scale hydrogen storage systems, and new emerging hydrogen technologies adapt to changing DOE – Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology office (HFTO) landscape in renewable hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, and hydrogen transmission. The successful candidate will need to maintain core capabilities for fuel cell and electrolyzer system modeling and expand skills in fuel cells for off-road applications including locomotives, maritime, aviation, and agriculture/construction/mining. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in nurturing new capabilities that build on our unique strengths, enhancing our research portfolio in this critical domain, and actively engage with external sponsors to secure funding and foster collaborative partnerships. This will require expertise in fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies, mechanical or chemical engineering, and computational science, analysis and decision support expertise, and experience in interpreting and potentially overseeing experimental programs.
As a group leader, be a role model employee in promoting Argonne Core values and DEIA principles.
Guide and mentor team members for advancing their career goals.
Lead and carry out a world-class engineering modeling, analysis, and simulation research program in hydrogen and fuel cell science, publish research findings in high-impact journals, present at conferences, and participate in public outreach activities to disseminate knowledge and raise awareness.
Maintain leadership in multiple DOE-HFTO consortia. Continue to assist DOE and provide guidance to industry for H2 and fuel cell science.
Contribute to the development of a strategic research plan for fuel cells aligned with HFTO in collaboration with other leaders at the laboratory.
Perform hands-on research as part of DOE consortia and guide team members in conceptualizing and executing on projects.
Identify emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges in these areas, propose innovative research directions to address them.
Cultivate relationships with external stakeholders, including government agencies, industry partners, and academic institutions, to secure funding and establish collaborative research initiatives.
Position Requirements
Ph.D. in a relevant field such as mechanical or chemical engineering, or a related discipline.
A minimum of 12 years of experience in leading or conducting engineering modeling and simulation research in the areas of fuel cells, electrolyzers, and new emerging technologies that utilize hydrogen or related fields.
Onsite presence is required.
Proven track record of leading multidisciplinary research teams and delivering impactful research outcomes.
Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and experience presenting research findings at conferences and public forums.
Skilled communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
Skills in program management, including managing a project team, project schedules, budgets and meeting project goals and objectives.
Skill in leadership, time management and working as a team member.
Extensive expertise in electrochemical science and engineering, hydrogen production and storage, engineering principles, and theories and practices for the analyses of components and energy conversion systems.
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
Ability to make our laboratory a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment where all can thrive.
