Detailed Description:

The Assistant Director of Residential Education, First-Year Communities is a live-in position that focuses on fostering community and opportunities for growth and development for residential students in our first-year communities. Reporting to the Associate Director of Residential Education, the Assistant Director supports the priorities and initiatives guiding the first-year residential experience, and provides overall leadership for the professional, paraprofessional, and student staff in these areas. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with staff and administrators in New Student Programs, more specifically within the Learning Communities (LC), to monitor and assess the residential aspects of the co-curricular learning outcomes for the LC program.

The Assistant Director serves on the Residential Life Leadership Team (RLLT), and shares in the responsibility of serving as a first responder to the professional staff during crisis and emergency response within the residence halls. Works collaboratively with University Ministry staff to support the Resident Ministry program. Periodically, this position may be asked to lead or contribute to either ad hoc or ongoing division/campus projects outside the scope of their day-to-day activities. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Staff Selection, Supervision, and Professional Development 

  • In consultation with the Associate Director, train, develop, and supervise the professional live-in staff in all areas of responsibility – Community Development, Community Standards, and Housing Operations.
  • Meet with direct supervisees (Community Directors) one-on-one on a regular basis to provide guidance, direction, and support in carrying out responsibilities.
  • Provide regular feedback to Residential Education staff regarding areas of strength and growth. Identify areas for additional training and development.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to Community Directors on job duties tied to timely and thorough management and completion of the conduct process .
  • Serve as the first level of support and/or escalation for residential issues managed by direct reports Work collaboratively with the Associate Director and Assistant Director for Continuing Student Communities to provide leadership and ensure holistic oversight of the Residential Education team.
