Job Description
General Description:
The Senior SQL Database Administrator (DBA) position will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and performance tuning of SQL Server databases. Job tasks include but are not limited to troubleshooting, resolving complex database issues in production, non-production environments, performing database health checks, capacity planning, and security audits. This role requires a deep understanding of database architecture, high availability, disaster recovery, and performance optimization.
Duties and Tasks:
The Senior SQL Database Administrator (DBA) position will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and performance tuning of SQL Server databases. Job tasks include but are not limited to troubleshooting, resolving complex database issues in production, non-production environments, performing database health checks, capacity planning, and security audits. This role requires a deep understanding of database architecture, high availability, disaster recovery, and performance optimization.
Duties and Tasks:
- Design, install, configure, and maintain SQL Server databases across development, testing, and production environments.
- Monitor database performance, implement changes, and apply new patches and versions when required.
- Ensure high levels of performance, availability, sustainability, and security.
- Develop and implement database backup and recovery strategies.
- Design and implement failover clustering in Microsoft Windows/SQL.
- Perform capacity planning and storage management.
- Collaborate with development and infrastructure teams to optimize queries and database structures.
- Automate routine database tasks using scripts and tools.
- Troubleshoot and resolve database issues, including performance bottlenecks and data integrity problems.
- Maintain documentation related to database configurations, processes, and procedures.
- Mentor junior DBAs and provide technical guidance to cross-functional teams.
- Understanding of DHRM Core Competencies/Standards
- Must be able to Pass CJIS Level 4 and FBI and Virginia State Police background check.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
KSA’s Requirements:
- Strong proficiency in SQL database design and administration including T-SQL, stored procedures, triggers, and performance tuning skills.
- Ability to diagnose, analyze, and resolve complex operational and security issues for Microsoft technologies
- Knowledge of identity, security, compliance, and Zero Trust concepts within enterprise infrastructure solutions
- Ability to design and implement automation to improve operational efficiency and reporting
- Ability to assess, test, and implement platform changes driven by industry, vendor roadmap updates, and business/user requirements.
- Ability to provide guidance, present findings, and work effectively with diverse technical and non-technical teams
- Excellent analytical and communication skills.
- Knowledge with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure SQL, AWS RDS).
Minimum Work Qualifications:
- Experience as a senior SQL Server DBA in an enterprise production environment.
- Experience in Microsoft SQL Server (2019 and newer), including SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS.
- Experience with high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions such as Always On, Log Shipping, Geo-clustering, and Replication.
- Experience with PowerShell or other scripting languages.
