Mission Systems Advanced Technology & Capabilities (ATC) is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to perform research & development in advanced radio frequency (RF)/microwave/millimeter wave design for our RF Technology team in Cedar Rapids, IA. This role will contribute to and lead a portfolio of projects—serving as design authority for RF board and system designs that operate under the most demanding conditions, rapidly developing new ideas, leading advanced technology development projects, and pursuing external funding.

As an ATC engineer, you will continually advance the state of the art through the creation of innovative system concepts and technological capabilities. As cutting-edge concepts / capabilities are proven, matured, and demonstrated, you will collaborate with business unit engineers in the adoption and transition of technologies into the next generation of Collins products and services.
Within a group of highly innovative engineers, this role provides leadership over low TRL (Technology Readiness Level <6) programs to ensure all the key performance characteristics are consistently met and that valuable IP is captured and protected as part of the Invention Disclosure process. The effective candidate will have experience both capturing pursuits and bringing the program’s vision to reality, including technical leadership and execution.
What you will do:
- Architect, design, simulate, layout, test, and troubleshoot cutting edge RF hardware for communication, navigation, radar, and electronic warfare applications (includes updates and clean sheet designs)
- Serve as hardware test lead in integration, verification and validation for products and subsystems of high complexity, including clean sheet designs
- Derive requirements for new designs from overall project goals
- Develop, champion, and pursue your own new ideas in advanced RF technology
- Collaborate to creatively solve problems in innovative ways
- Create presentations explaining the approach and relevance to the design
- Support external funding pursuits through proposal writing and/or customer meetings
- Assist in technical strategic planning, including development of technology roadmaps and project concepts in alignment with business unit goals
- Lead and monitor performance of assigned tasks (including technical, cost, schedule, design to cost, and manufacturability)
- Lead project teams (3-5 individuals)
- Train and oversee less experienced designers
Qualifications you must have:
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience
- Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements
- Demonstrated ability to design, layout, and analyze circuits using RF/microwave tools such as Keysight ADS, AWR Microwave Office, Cadence Virtuouso, SPICE, or SystemVue
- Experience with transceiver components, such as filters, low-noise amplifiers, mixers, power amplifiers, power regulators/converters, switches, and synthesizers
Qualifications we prefer:
- Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Physics, or related field
- Active Security Clearance
- Specific experience with Power Amplifier circuit design in various frequency bands
- Experience with electromagnetic or multi-physics simulation environments, such as ANSYS, Altair, or COMSOL
- Mixed-signal experience and demonstrated ability to design with high-speed digital signal lines, FPGA’s, processors, or other digital components/subsystems
- Experience with whitepapers and reviewing/responding to Req
