Job Duties: 

This position serves as the director of the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission (ANHC) and works under the general direction of the director of the Division of Arkansas Heritage (DAH).  The ANHC director is responsible for directing the operation of the natural areas preservation program to protect Arkansas’s indigenous environment.

Position directly supervises a professional staff; formulates, monitors and evaluates long-range goals and objectives for the conservation and use of natural areas in the Arkansas.  Solicits public support for the Natural Areas and Heritage programs and participates in the development and implementation of outreach and marketing strategies; seeks funding for agency projects and provides input on funding requests and grant proposals.   Position directs land acquisition activities for inclusion in the Natural Areas Program; oversees and guides actions for recommending purchase, negotiating with landowners, obtains surveys, appraisals, title search, insurance and opinions and submits warrants to close purchase.  Develops biennial budget for commission and monitors expenditures.  Develops and promotes partnerships with other government agencies, non-profit organizations, public, and private businesses.

 

Required knowledge includes Natural Areas and Heritage programs; grant application, implementation and monitoring methods; ecoregions and ecological processes; conservation principles that guide species research and habitat management.  Knowledge of state budgetary and fiscal policies and procedures.  Ability to plan, organize and oversee the work of employees, develop and evaluate implementation of long-rage goals and objectives.  

    

Applicants must meet or exceed these qualifications:  Formal educational equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, or related field plus six years of experience in program development and administration, including three years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

 

Preferred qualifications:  Formal educational equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in land and natural resource management, environmental interpretation or related field.
