About the role

Summary

Responsible for providing circulation services to library patrons. Also responsible for communicating library policies and procedures as related to circulation services, performing clerical duties in support of library circulation, assisting with the maintenance of the patron database, as well as assisting with handling library materials.

Pay Range: $13.88 - 17.10 (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Work Schedule: Includes days, nights and weekends, and may include changes to the regular schedule required to participate in occasional programming and outreach services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist library patrons at the circulation desk, checking out and checking in library materials.

  • Register patrons and issue library patron cards.

  • Create and edit patron account records.

  • Assist the public in person and on the phone.

  • Provide general Library information & general assistance.

  • Collect statistics.

  • Collect fees and perform simple accounting duties.

  • Check in serials, handle minor mending, and replace barcodes.

  • Assist in locating materials on the shelves.

  • Assist in maintaining the order of collection.

  • Assist in returning library materials to the shelves.

Minimum Education & Work Experience

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)

  • Up to 1-year related experience in a library, retail, or service environment using computer technologies

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:     

  • Up to 1-year advanced study or training beyond the high school level

  • 1-2 years’ retail or office support experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic skills in PC and systems application

  • Good customer service and telephone etiquette skills

  • Good oral and written communications skills

  • Ability to multitask

  • Ability to adapt to various working environments

  • Ability to work independently and/or in a team environment

  • Ability to work under close supervision

  • Knowledge of library organization and cataloguing systems

  • Ability to organize materials according to alpha and numeric system

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time

  • Ability to lift objects

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with the public

  • Ability to handle citizen concerns and other public/personal situations

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license
