GENERAL SUMMARY

Under direction, coordinates services for young children with diagnosed or suspected mental health and/or behavioral challenges in conjunction with other program service areas. Provides resources and support to classroom and home-based staff taking a preventative perspective. Works with parents and other appropriate agencies to facilitate necessary services. Monitors and ensures the proper implementation of mental health standards and early child development services. Develops, implements and coordinates a comprehensive child health and family needs program to ensure optimal health for enrolled children in accordance with Head Start health services objectives, ensuring the Head Start Act, Performance Standards and Licensing Regulations are followed. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Monitors and ensures the implementation of the goals and objectives of the Head Start Program.

Develops, implements and coordinates a comprehensive child health and family needs program to ensure optimal health for enrolled children in accordance with Head Start health services objectives.

Observes, supervises and evaluates classroom staff and operations.

Plans and facilitates staff orientations, trainings, meetings and in-services.

Coaches and mentors classroom staff to carry out improvement goals and objectives.

Acts as a resource person for developmentally appropriate activities and practices.

Builds partnerships to facilitate access to mental health resources and services as needed.

Plans and conducts workshops to provide staff and parents with training and information.

Conducts home visits to ensure that child and family needs are met.

Ensures the desired mental health environment is maintained in the classroom.

Documents and maintains written records including classroom observations and operations, and staff performance.

Compiles necessary statistical data and completes all necessary and required reports, including data entry.

Monitors and ensures compliance of the Head Start Act, Head Start Performance Standards and State of Michigan Licensing Regulations, including inspections and Corrective Action Plans.

Ensures educational and mental health services are coordinated and integrated with all other services areas.

Participates in the interviewing and selection of Head Start classroom staff.

Supervises, assigns and evaluates the work activities of support staff.

Maintains and updates knowledge through conferences, seminars and in-service trainings as determined in consultation with Agency leadership.

Operates an automobile to perform assigned job functions.  

Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work or a directly related field

  • Two (2) years of experience working with the social/emotional needs of young children

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Early Childhood Development, Psychology, Counseling, Social Work or a directly related field

  • Previous supervisory or management experience

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and operable, insured automobile for authorized travel

Preferred Licenses or Certifications

  • State of Michigan license in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work or a behavioral health field

  • Endorsement in infant/early childhood mental health from Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health (MI-AIMH)
