Overview:
We are seeking a Technical Professional who will support the REDC Laboratory Chemical Operations Group within the Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD), Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Utilizing the unique capabilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and related radiochemical and nuclear processing facilities, IPMD supports a variety of projects supplying difficult to produce radioisotopes essential for medical, research, and industrial applications. The REDC Laboratory Chemical Operations Group is responsible for separating, dispensing, and preparing a variety of radioisotope shipments for the missions of the private organizations, commercial institutions, Department of Energy (DOE) and other government agencies. Our current focus is on processing and production of radioisotopes used in medical, scientific and commercial applications, including actinides, Ra-223, Es-254, Bk-249, Ac-225, Ac-227 and Th-227.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop in-depth understanding and knowledge of radioisotope production processes.
- Support the scientific mission of the isotope program by developing strategies to identify and to improve the overall manufacturing operations.
- Support production equipment installation and maintenance schedules.
- Provide support to execute the technical vision for continuous improvement and optimization.
- Work closely with technicians, quality representatives, engineers, and scientists to understand manufacturing issues and help provide solutions to mitigate them.
- Interface with internal and external customers on relevant analysis, systems, processes, and waste activities.
- Collaborate with peers in other isotope manufacturing groups to leverage community developed solutions.
- Participate in project reviews, including presenting to internal and external customers.

Basic Qualifications:
- A Bachelors of Science in Chemistry, or similar field, and a minimum of 2 years of related experience is required.
- Experience reading radioanalytical data such as gamma, alpha, and mass spectroscopy.
- Strong computer and organizational skills with the ability to multitask.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in handling radioactive materials
- Experience with wet chemical processing methods in radiostope production and dispensing using radiological hoods, glove box and/or remote handling hot cell operations
- Experience working in a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) environment.
- Understanding of radioisotope applications in nuclear medicine.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Experience with the execution of chemical processing techniques such as solvent extraction and ion exchange.
