About the role

Position Summary

The Laboratory Phlebotomist is responsible for the completion of the routine workload in the specimen collection and processing areas according to established laboratory policies and procedures, the exact nature of the work may vary depending on the workload and the assigned tasks.

 

Qualifications/Experience

Education: 

Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

 

Experience: 

Desirable characteristics include at least two years experience in a hospital or medically related environment. Must be able to follow directions and to perform work according to department standards when no directions are given. Must be mature and able to function effectively under stress.

Must follow and enforce accepted safety practices for patients and SARH.

Must report hazards and initiate appropriate action.

Must participate in safety instructional programs.

Correctly identifies patient specimens according to established laboratory protocols 100% of the time.

Successfully collects venipuncture samples with minimal discomfort to the patient 98% of the time.

Successfully collects capillary samples with minimal discomfort to the patient 98% of the time.

Correctly transmits reports by fax, printer or verbally 100% of the time.

Communicates with patients and customers with a smile and in a pleasant manner 98% of the time.

Communicates testing time requests and patient information to testing personnel 99% of the time.

Transcribes patient results into the computer system accurately 100% of the time.

Follows department protocols for identification of Blood Bank samples 100% of the time.

Properly disposes of needles and other contaminated waste 100% of the time.

Performs additional tasks as assigned
