Department Summary

The College of Education (COE) prepares professionals and scholars who contribute to the advancement of education, health, and human development. The mission of the Student Advising Office is to:

  • Support the University of North Texas and the College of Education by providing developmental academic advising.
  • Assist students in the development of academic plans in accordance with their life goals.
  • Partner with students to assist them in their pursuit of academic success in their chosen fields.

Position Overview

Advising students on State, University and College degree/program requirements, course scheduling, maintaining and updating student status records, transcript evaluations, degree plan audits, and graduation applications. Serves as a subject matter expert on specialized majors determining how transfer credits apply toward degree requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and four years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong presentation, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Advanced academic advising expertise.
  • Ability to integrate and analyze information and develop reports.
  • Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications. Ability to effectively manage projects and work teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing with internal and external groups in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Preferred Qualifications

Preference given to those who have advanced experience and knowledge of student advising issues and university / college policies and procedures and the ability to translate information for all majors. Advanced knowledge of degree programs, attention to detail, and ability to solve complex problems is strongly preferred. Strong communication, selfdirection, managerial and supervisory skills are desired. This position requires excellent organizational and time management skills, as well as the ability to collaborate and work with other university offices. Must enjoy working with students and colleagues with a focus on active engagement for all parties.
