Major Responsibilities:
Maternal screening
- Assists medical team in determination of maternal screening needs that impact health care delivery to the Neonate. (HIV, Hepatitis, RPR)
- Assist medical team with locating absent screening.
- Communicate screening results of all transport infants to Perinatal Outreach coordinator.
- Guide staff to compliance with regulatory and recommended regulations. (HBIG and hepatitis B injection on all unknown maternal status infants beyond 12 hours. HIV drawn on all unknown maternal status neonates.)
NICU Required Screening
Newborn Screens
- Ensure completion of newborn screen on all neonates as required by American Academy of Pediatrics within designated time frame.
- Confirm all infants requiring repeat newborn screens are scheduled.
- Prior to discharge make sure all newborn screens have been completed.
- Follow up with the state on all newborn screens drawn. Any abnormal results will need a redraw so your responsibility would be to notify the appropriate provider to order a redraw.
Hearing screens
- Ensure all newborns have had a hearing screen prior to discharge.
- Partner with care manager to provide additional testing and outpatient referrals.
Eye exams
- Partner with care managers to ensure at risk infants who are 1500g and 32weeks gestation are scheduled for eye exams.
- Providing education to the family about exam and potential treatment.
- Assist with scheduling discharge eye appointments.
- Follow up with patients who are readmitted to the pediatrics and pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) prior to scheduled outpatient exam.
- May need to follow up with Ophthalmologists office to make sure appointments are kept by parent/guardian. If appointments not kept, then call family/guardian to reschedule and if that appointment is not kept send certified letter to family/guardian. If there is still no compliance to keep appointment, partner with the care manager and social worker to contact DCFS for potential risk of harm.
Toxicology
- Follow up on toxicology results on urine/meconium done on high-risk neonates.
- Discuss results with neonatologists and social worker.
CCHD Screening
- Verify pulse oximetry screening for CCHD is performed 24 hours of age or before discharge, following the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH)/ APA guidelines.
Patient Safe Sleep Compliance
Car seat challenge screening for all infants born < 37 weeks gestation
- Ensure screening is completed and documented prior to discharge.
- Partner with the care manager and social worker to get the patient a car bed with instruction on use.
ILPQC and Vermont Oxford Network (VON) Partner
- Participate in unit-based meetings
- Partner with the VON lead with gathering data
- Partner with the Perinatal Outreach Coordinator with gathering data.
- Identify trends from registries like Vermont Oxford Network (VON), ILPQC, or hospital-specific dashboards. Serve as a liaison between the NICU and external organizations for data sharing and reporting requirements.
Align data with strategic goals:
- Review hospital/system-wide priorities or mandates (e.g., ILPQC initiatives, DE&I goals, SPS).
- Consider accreditation requirements, US News, or external benchmarks.
- LOS
- Patient/Family satisfaction scores
- Annual planning:
- Conduct a comprehensive review of unit performance and goals to align QI efforts with long-term priorities (also assist in REACT Book work) and review with site leadership
Additional Tasks:
- Complete daily discharge calls
- Report high risk case to the state via APORS
- Neonatal Surgical Data collection per IDPH and the 640 Perinatal code

- The Perinatal Outcomes Coordinator
