Job Summary

The Deputy Dean of Students and Associate Dean of the College reports to the Dean of Students in the College and the Dean of the College to support the leadership, vision, and direction of the Dean of Students Office, with particular emphasis on student success, support, and overall student experience. The Deputy Dean serves as the primary delegate of the Dean of Students in handling student affairs and student life matters and supports efforts to increase student satisfaction, student retention, persistence, and graduation across the DOS. In this role, the Deputy Dean serves on the Dean of Students senior leadership team, leads a number of divisional initiatives, and collaborates with various academic and non-academic offices to create programming and experiences that foster success for all students at the College and which promote and support learning and student development, community-building, and the personal and professional growth of students. The Deputy Dean assesses complex student issues (personal, academic, financial) and designs and implements interventions as appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Leads office-wide and division-wide projects, sets and communicates priorities, and maintains programmatic excellence for the College Care and Support, College Programming and Orientation, and Housing and Residence Life teams.
• Works closely with College leaders, partners, and University stakeholders to facilitate coordination, promote positive student outcomes, and strengthen partnerships for the unit and its teams.
• Leads the Student Experience unit in the Dean of Students.
• Directly supervises team leaders. Provides regular feedback to leaders and regularly engages with teams. Provides for robust and thorough training and development of leaders and team members, as needed.
• Acts in place of the Dean of Students, as needed.
• Oversees College-wide efforts pertaining to the student experience. Creates strategies for programs that improve student experience, successful onboarding and transitioning between years, persistence, and retention.
• Ensures compliance with relevant federal and state regulations related to student affairs and higher education. Stays abreast of changing laws and best practices to maintain a safe and inclusive campus environment.
• Conducts regular assessments of programs designed to impact the student experience to evaluate their impact and make data-driven improvements.
• Together with the Dean of Students, provides leadership and strategic direction for the Dean of Students office and a broad range of services and programs to enrich the overall student experience and to assist and support students across the University with their academic, career, and personal development.
• Serves as Associate Dean of the College. Working directly with the Dean, promotes a positive atmosphere where faculty and staff can contribute meaningfully and impact positively the overall student experience.
• Represents the College to high-level constituencies including students, University leadership and partners, faculty committees, advisory councils, donors, and parents.
• Serves on College- and University-wide committees related to student experience. Convene working groups and ad hoc committees, as appropriate.
• Oversees College-wide efforts pertaining to the student experience. Creates strategies for programs that improve the student experience, successful onboarding and transitioning between years, persistence, and retention.
• Directs College-wide responses to and procedures that support student emergencies.
• Serves as a resource and provides guidance to Dean of Students staff who oversee student discipline, emergency response, and work with students in crisis.
• Provides subject matter expertise to the College community in the event of a student emergency or death or other significant student crisis, working with University partners, including Campus and Student Life, UChicago Police Department, College Communications, as well as families, faculty, staff, and student communities.
• In conjunction with College Communications team, coordinates College responses to major crises and other significant events impacting students within the College community.
• Manages employees through subordinates, usually other managers. Establishes performance goals, allocates resources and assesses policies for direct subordinates. Contributes to departmental strategy.
