The Lead Systems Engineer is responsible for practical and innovative ways to meet system design, development, and deployment objectives. In this role you will demonstrate leadership in communicating business goals, programs, and processes for an area or business segment. The Lead Systems Engineer will utilize experience or expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and have the ability to effect short-term and some long-term business goals.

In addition, you will:

  • Define system level requirements to adapt Trip Optimizer for operation on electric locomotives.

  • Work with assigned customer(s) to identify customer specific product requirements.

  • Define system level requirements of new product features of general use and importance.

  • Coordinate technical aspects and lead requisitions for complex system implementations.

  • Work closely with Product Management leaders to ensure customer’s critical to quality requirements are evaluated and flowed down appropriately through System Functional Specifications and Interface Control Documents

  • Ensure that the product at the system level is validated.

  • Participate in the proposal process to insure that only sound technical solutions are offered to customers.

  • Work closely with the commercial and technology teams to create system configurations differentiated in the market.

  • Configure products for placement on the competitive landscape and define of product specifications including performance, cost, and schedule.

  • Implement the timely execution of product conceptual designs to meet evolving market needs.

  • Coordinate design, project, and system engineers during detailed design, start-up, and warranty administration phases of project.

  • Leverage cross-functional and cross business resources in order to maximize technical results.

  • Supervise activities such as field issues and failures investigations, root causes analysis and implementation of corrective actions, lesson learned issues, and consequently design standards update.

  • Build solid relationships with key customers and suppliers.

Qualifications/Requirements     

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Physics, or Mathematics from an accredited college or university

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in an Engineering role

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a Systems Engineering role

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally to meet with railroad customers, to experience operations and develop technical solutions

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with Controls and/or Optimization of a dynamic system

  • Systems design, operation and integration experience

Desired Characteristics 

  • Broad railroad experience pertaining to locomotives technologies, and will span broad skill areas related to hardware, software, and mechanical design, as well as communications technology.

  • Deep technical understanding of locomotive electronics products and applications
