Department Overview
Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. As a whole, Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E’s gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response.
Gas Transmission Operations is responsible for maintaining over 6,000 miles of gas transmission pipelines throughout California. This Department is responsible for the overall administration and implementation of the Transmission Integrity Management Program and the evaluation of overall risk to the gas transmission system. This includes overseeing the completion of integrity management assessments, identifying High Consequence Areas (HCA), maintaining PG&E's assessment plan as required by 49 CFR Subpart O, and managing PG&E's overall gas risk management program.
Position Summary
This Expert Gas Technical Specialist position reports to the Risk Management Supervising Engineer under the Data, Risk, and Threat team, and is critical to PG&E’s Gas Transmission Integrity Management Program to help ensure PG&E maintains safe and reliable pipelines which comply with federal regulations. The role will work on a cross-functional team of Engineers, Data Specialists, Data Scientists, and Program Managers to provide GIS and database support for the implementation of the Risk Management duties of PG&E’s approximately 6000-mile transmission pipeline system. The Expert Specialist will work with many key internal stakeholders such as Asset Knowledge Management, Gas Transmission Engineering & Design, Enterprise Risk Management, and Regulatory Compliance.
The primary responsibility of the Expert Gas Technical Specialist is to provide GIS data analysis, reporting, and technical support to the Transmission Integrity Management Program as assigned. Other duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform geospatial analysis in support of Integrity Management Programs
- Data analysis Support for Enterprise Risk Models and GT&S Rate Case Programs
- Work collaboratively with other work groups and vendors, troubleshoot issues, produce technical communication
- Provide guidance and validation for New Century tool development
- Manage risk data integration process and collaborating with risk engineers responsible for threats; data validation and triaging issues, documentation, communication, process QAQC review
- Direct IT to run FME scripts for the annual risk/threat update, validate and triage issues; run offline data processing work-arounds if required.
- Advocate data improvement for TIMP needs with enterprise systems and supporting Data Asset Management and the Foundry initiative, performing UAT when needed for GTGIS and other relevant data systems
- Support data scientists with data requests and data integration guidance, and sourcing data from public or other PG&E departments
- Interface with IT in general, including providing monthly leak review data pull, acquiring data from SCADA, Synergi, and other systems or data owner groups in collaboration with risk engineers
- Support the preparation of annual reports to regulatory agencies
- Support enterprise GIS data modeling and data capture initiatives as well as software functionality review.
- Provide user support with GIS tools / functionality
- Respond to requests for GIS queries or maps for special projects.
- Assess and coordinate GIS software and hardware needs of the department, evaluate new GIS software and databases
- Continually identify opportunities for improvement in the way work is done, share expertise and lessons learned
- Provide guidance and mentoring to junior specialists within TIMP Risk Management
Minimal travel – travel to field sites for training and team building about 5 times a year. Hybrid work with regular (monthly) in-person attendance in the Bishop Ranch office or the San Ramon Valley Conference Center.
