Be at the forefront of change and become a part of the innovative and forward-thinking academic team at the University of Michigan-Flint’s Public Health & Health Sciences Department in the rapidly expanding College of Health Sciences! The Department of Public Health and Health Sciences (PHHS), College of Health Sciences, seeks candidates for tenure-track or a clinical track assistant professor that will serve as the Program Director of the newly developed Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science program. This position is 60% instructional and 40% administrative. The track and rank will be commensurate with experience and academic credentials. The desired start date for this position is August 28, 2024 .

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Program Director (40%)

• Responsible for all aspects of the program, including the development, organization, administration, assessment, planning, development and general effectiveness of the program

• Provide functional supervision, administration and coordination of the instructional staff in the academic and clinical phases of the educational program.

• Develop, revise and evaluate curriculum in accordance with CAAHEP accreditation and university standards.

• Recruit program students

• Advise students and clinical staff relative to program objectives

• Represent the program at the university, community, regional and professional level

• Engage in continuing professional development through professional associations and research activities to maintain current knowledge of professional discipline and educational methodologies

• Chair program advisory committee(s).

Principal Faculty duties (60%)

Teaching:

Teach both on-campus and on-line in the BS in Exercise Science program

Scholarship

Maintains personal scholarship according to the College of Health Sciences scholarship requirements for clinical-track or tenure-track faculty. Clinical track faculty are required to have an active research agenda and may achieve this by working with other faculty. Tenure track faculty are required to have an active research agenda, establish their ability to conduct independent research, and may work collaboratively with other faculty in scholarly endeavors. In both clinical and tenure tracks, scholarly work is expected to make a contribution to and an impact on the profession/field/discipline, to interdisciplinary areas, and/or to pedagogical endeavors.

Service

All CHS faculty members are expected to provide service to the University, college, department, profession and the community. Consistent with the mission of CHS and the University, professional service contributions to the Flint and regional community are valued as well as national and international contributions. Engagement in service activities at multiple levels is required. The quality and impact of service contributions is more important than the number of different service activities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• A minimum of an academic degree

  • For a Clinical Track Assistant Professor, a master’s degree in Exercise Sciences* is required. 

  • For a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, a Ph.D. in Exercise Sciences* or equivalent  is required.

*Exercise Sciences may include, but are not limited to, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Human Performance, Sports or Movement Science. 

• Academic background or expertise in one or more of the following:

  • For a Clinical track Assistant Professor,  previous experience in Exercise Sciences

  • For a Tenure-track Assistant Professor previous experience and research background in Exercise Science

• Evidence of strong potential for scholarly growth and for acquiring external funding (applicable to tenure-track positions)

Desired Qualifications

• Work experience in an administrative role is highly desired.
• Successful college/university teaching experience is preferred.
