ETS Engineer II – Platform Engineering, Virtual Server Engineering (VSE)
Navy Federal Credit UnionAbout the role
The Virtual Server Engineering (VSE) team provides infrastructure design, implementation, and management for virtualized infrastructure and the supporting physical server infrastructure. These services include virtualization platforms, disaster recovery, migration, automation, monitoring, and optimization of the virtual environment.
Virtual Server Engineering uses Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and engineering discipline to design, build and maintain large-scale Virtual Environments with high efficiency and availability using the combination of software and systems engineering practices. In this position, you will leverage an SRE mindset and set of engineering approaches to running better production systems and optimizations, with efforts focused on limiting time spent on reactive operational work, eliminating manual work through automation, performance tuning, and growing the efficiency of production systems. Our Virtual Server Engineers are responsible for the big picture of how our systems relate and communicate; we use a breadth of tools and approaches to tackle a broad spectrum of problems. Virtual Server Engineering currently employs two primary products: VMware vSphere and Cisco UCS (Unified Computing System).
VSEs’ culture of diversity, intellectual curiosity, creative problem-solving, and openness is essential to its success. Our organization brings together people with various backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We encourage everyone to collaborate, both within and outside our team, think big, and take risks in a blame-free environment. We promote self-direction to work on meaningful projects while striving to build an environment that provides the support and mentorship needed to learn and grow.
- Design, implement, and support large-scale Virtual Environments (e.g., VMware, Nutanix, OpenShift Virtualization, Hyper-V), including engaging in and improving the whole lifecycle of services — from inception and design to deployment, operation, and refinement, and through decommissioning.
- Design, implement, and support large-scale Hardware Environments (e.g., Cisco, HP, Dell), including engaging in and improving the whole lifecycle of services — from inception and design to deployment, operation, and refinement, and through decommissioning.
- Identify opportunities to leverage and implement automation and Infrastructure as Code to provision and maintain our virtual environment and increase customer enablement. Leverage automation to reduce the number of manual processes performed to have more time to focus on value-added work.
- Support and maintain services and systems before they go live and when in production, including monitoring availability, latency, performance, and system health.
- Contribute to systematic exploration, discovery, and recommendation of new and emerging technologies pertaining to VSEs' services.
- Create, update, and maintain documentation reflecting all virtual environments' architecture, configuration, and operation.
- Provide incident and ticket responses and participate in an On-Call rotation.
- BS degree in Computer Science or a related technical field or equivalent experience.
- Three years or more of practical experience.
- Strong firsthand experience with large-scale Virtual Environments (e.g., VMware, Nutanix, OpenShift Virtualization, Hyper-V).
- Strong firsthand experience with large-scale Hardware Environments (e.g., Cisco, HP, Dell).
- Experience with containerization of software services (e.g., OpenShift, Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience with scripting languages (e.g., JavaScript, Python, Bash, and PowerCLI).
- Experience with Automation software (e.g., Ansible, Packer, Terraform, Azure Automation).
- Experience with version control, GIT experience preferred.
- General knowledge of both networking and storage systems.
Desired Qualifications
- Interest in crafting, analyzing, and improving large-scale Virtual Environments.
- Experience with multiple virtual environment platforms.
- Assisted in the development of CI/CD processes.
- Familiar with Agile methodology.
- Experience with Cloud Platforms such as AWS and Azure.
- Ability to debug and optimize code and automate routine tasks.
- Bring a systematic problem-solving approach, solid communication skills, and a sense of ownership and drive.
