ROLE of the POSITION

This position supports the Shop Supervisor in general day-to-day operations while serving as the lead technician overseeing all water-based fire protection systems within the Fire Alarm Shop. Working under general supervision at the advanced journey level, the incumbent functions as a lead worker for the Fire Shop Technicians by assigning and reviewing work, providing training and technical assistance, and contributing input to performance evaluations; responds to all fire alarms and system troubles during and after regular hours by investigating causes, coordinating with building occupants (faculty, staff, and students), acknowledging or resetting systems, and interfacing with the local fire department as needed; implements safety procedures, secures work areas, and maintains accountability for assigned staff, tools, and equipment; sets priorities, schedules inspections, organizes and coordinates work activities, reads and interprets blueprints, troubleshoots and diagnoses faulty fire alarm, suppression, and sprinkler components using appropriate test equipment, determines the most cost-effective repair or replacement methods, estimates job costs, acquires materials through vendors or requisitions, maintains adequate inventory, completes repairs, documents time and materials for billing, and works cooperatively with other trades and outside contractors. The incumbent works with considerable independence, prioritizes emergency and routine assignments to ensure timely completion, and possesses all knowledge, skills, and abilities required at the advanced level for fire alarm, suppression, and sprinkler systems maintenance and repair.
