About the role

CSS has immediate openings for Safety and Health Specialists to provide industrial hygiene, biosafety and occupational safety services at our client site, the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.


Overview:

Candidates should have experience and knowledge in assessing workplace hazards and collecting pertinent data to document findings. The Safety and Health Specialists will document findings, assess controls in place, support animal research studies, and recommend additional controls to reduce risk. The position requires a team-oriented professional with strong organizational skills as well as excellent writing and oral communication skills.


Duties:

  • Conducts laboratory surveys, risk-based assessments, and laboratory clearances.
  • Serves as a liaison between Safety Operation Support Branch (SOSB), Technical Assistance Branch (TAB), and Institute of Biosafety Committee (IBC) with various other departments and NIH Staff (i.e., lab managers, PI's, and post-docs).
  • Serves as safety committee member on Animal Care and Use Committee and reviews animal study protocols, along with their modifications for biological and chemical safety hazards.
  • Participates in development and implementation of novel and existing training programs designed to increase awareness of safety hazards, enhance the understanding of preventative measures, and promote safe and healthful practices.
  • Makes recommendations to the branch chief on administration of safety programs at NIH
  • Provides specialized training to fellow safety specialists to assist them understand complex scientific procedures and how to properly assess risk in biological laboratories
  • Mentors/Supports fellow safety specialist in problem solving methods and techniques
  • Create and implement biological lab surveys for application by SOSB team members
  • Mentor/training on risk assessments
  • Assists junior members, training on lab surveys completion including technical guidance.
  • Mentoring/training on animal study protocols.
  • Performs investigations and interviews to follow up on incidents involving personal injury, illness, or property damage, providing analysis and feedback on prevention of future occurrences.
  • Proposes action items for prevention based on scientific analysis.
  • Support assigned Institutes/Centers with various safety concerns, questions, and surveys.
  • Help with year-end efforts to finish outstanding safety surveys.

Qualifications:

  • BS or MS degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene or related discipline
  • Two or more years of related laboratory safety and health experience
  • Experience working in laboratories and knowledge of ES&H standards and regulations
  • Effective written and oral communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a solid contributor in a team environment
  • Capable of multi-tasking and changing direction depending on workload
  • Previous Federal government experience
