Title: Classroom Assistant
Reports To:  Building Principal
Takes Direction From:  Classroom Teachers 
Schedule/Calendar:  5.75 hrs/day      28.75 hrs/week           180 days/year 
 

Summary:  The Classroom Assistant is responsible for providing academic and social emotional assistance to assigned students under the direct supervision of a teacher.  The Classroom Assistant will support in conducting and managing of classroom activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in the supervision of learning activities, circulating within the classroom and providing assistance and learning support to students.
  • Supports instruction to students as prescribed by the supervising teacher and reinforces skills introduced by the teacher, including:
    • Social emotional regulation and communication skills.
    • Academics�reading, writing, math concepts, etc.
  • Assists teachers in checking and objectively evaluating students' work.
  • Works with students individually and in small groups reinforcing skills based upon instructional guidelines; May utilize games, stories, or other manipulatives to enhance students' learning skills.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior in accordance with school and/or district initiatives; e.g. PBIS, Morning Meetings, etc.
  • Assists in managing student behavior and maintaining classroom order; Reinforces rules of the school and classroom.
  • Monitors students progressive learning skills and communicates them to the teacher; Documents record of learning activities and progress.
  • Escorts students to designated activity areas, i.e., music room, computer room, art classes, assemblies, etc.
  • Provides assistance to students identified as having a social-emotional and/or behavioral issue.
  • Assists with implementation of classroom behavior strategies and interventions and/or individual student accommodations, modifications and/or behavior intervention plans, classroom plan and/or other guidelines.
  • Participates in job-related meetings as requested; maintains confidentiality of individual students/families.
  • Contributes relevant feedback/information on student progress through observation, interaction and maintaining accurate records.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships with all parents/care providers, staff and students.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Education and/or Certification Required: 

  • Associate's degree, two years of study at an institution of higher learning, preferred.
  • High School Diploma/GED and willingness to earn the highly qualified status.

Experience Needed:

  • Experience related to education and training activities in an organized learning environment.
  • Experience with K-12 students preferred; for Kindergarten classroom assignment, experience with pre-K or primary grade (Gr. K-2) children preferred.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Knowledge of:

  • Trauma-informed practices, positive behavior management strategies, wellness practices, preferred.

Skills:

  • Basic email skills, including the ability to send and open a file attachment.
  • Google Suite (i.e., gmail, Google Doc, etc.) preferred.

Ability to :

  • assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
