POSITION TITLE: Social Studies Department Chair
LOCATION: Brooke Middle School
QUALIFICATIONS: Holds a valid teaching certificate, with three years successful teaching experience. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administrative Duties
- Conducts department and Professional Learning Community meetings as needed using a prepared agenda.
- Contacts teachers, as directed by the CTE Director or Principal in order to discuss department work.
- Recommends, with the cooperation of teachers, the acquisition of new or additional materials of instruction and software for the department and assists in the scheduling and coordinated usage of these materials.
- Recommends to the CTE Director or Principal individual teaching assignments for the members of the department and presents teaching schedule for the department.
- Assists with interviews for departmental positions in accordance with instructions supplied by the director of Personnel and the CTE Director or Principal.
- Responsible for certifying an annual inventory of instructional supplies and equipment, preparing with teachers a department budget request, approving all department requisitions, supervising the maintenance of department equipment, working with assigned personnel in the formulation of projects and/or requests for available federal or state subsidies. Assists with organizing, printing of programs, presentation ceremonies for CTE Awards Night.
- Complies data necessary for the Work-keys Testing, 21st Century performance assessments, placement, credentialing and CTSO's and other data as needed for county, state, and federal accountability.
- Fulfills any other unforeseen departmental responsibilities and curricular duties assigned by the CTE Director, Principal, Superintendent, or his designee.
- Staff Personnel Duties
- Discusses and implements administrative directives with the department.
- Orients teachers to departmental policy and other necessary details.
- Encourages and stimulates enrollment in professional groups and attendance at professional meetings.
- Works with departmental staff in developing long-range plans for the department planning and writing necessary CSO's, benchmark assessments, and other methods of improving the total program of instruction.
- Recommends to the guidance department the level placement of students enrolled in the department after consultation with the classroom teacher where applicable.
- Reports and analyzes the number of students failed and reasons for failure.
- Gives input to assignment of substitute teachers serving in the department.
- Delegates duties, as necessary, to accomplish departmental projects and goals.
- Confers with individual teachers of the department when necessary to assure that the department is working within the guidelines of administrative directives.
- Student Personnel Duties
- Responsible for establishing standards and evaluating progress to determine the degree of achievement and need for curricular change.
- Makes provision for testing programs within the department and is responsible for its design, execution and distribution when applicable.
- Recommends the initiation of curriculum changes.
- Supervises the entrance of pupils or pupil work into school approved contests and co-curricular activities pertaining to the department when appropriate.
- Provides CTE Director with completer lists, assessments of students, and placement data pertaining to student's profile.
- Curriculum Duties
- Determines, with teachers, the need for modification and updating of the total departmental programs through constant evaluation which involves the usage of objective data.
- Answers inquiries regarding courses of study.
- Prepares, with teachers, written curriculum evaluations when necessary.
- Recommends continuing education courses.
- Integrates the work of the department into the total instructional program of the school.
- Suggests, with the cooperation of teachers, books, magazines and pamphlets to be purchased by the school media specialist.
