About the role
Airbnb was born in 2007 when two Hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 4 million Hosts who have welcomed more than 1 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, Hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.
The Community You Will Join:
- The Analytics Infrastructure team’s mission is to enable universal data-informed decision-making at Airbnb. We achieve this by providing an integrated suite of analytics frameworks, services and applications. We’re infrastructure and full stack engineers with a human focus: customer-centric, quality driven, helpful and empathetic.
- As a backend software engineer on the Analytics Products team (which is part of Analytics Infrastructure) you will have the opportunity to build data tools which enable data practitioners to efficiently explore and analyze data to create insights. The team manages Apache Superset (BI tool currently used by over 2500 weekly active users) and its integrations within the Data Platform tooling, like Airbnb’s in-house build Metric system which enables metric consistency at scale.
The Difference You Will Make:
- Shape up the future of Apache Superset through open source collaboration, internal user engagement and direct code contributions. By plugging into the open source community - its release, roadmap and operational processes, you will help shape and drive new Apache Superset improvements and features and ensure they scale for Airbnb’s user base.
- Collaborate with other data platform teams to build integrations of our data tools (like Superset) with Airbnb's data platform’s ecosystem, like the metric infrastructure which enables metric consistency at scale, data management platform which enables data discovery and data management, data warehouse infrastructure and services, and more.
- Continue to hold high quality bar for our data tools, to ensure high stability and reliability for Airbnb’s data practitioners.
- Support and build internal data tools beyond Superset.
A Typical Day:
- You will split your time between internal projects specifically focusing on integrations of Superset within the Data Platform’s ecosystem, and open source contributions to Apache Superset project.
- Collaborate with Apache Superset open source community - major project proposals, code reviews, official releases.
- Collaborate with teams within Airbnb’s data platform on integrations of Superset within the data platform’s infrastructure.
- Build new features to support our users' workflows, either within Apache Superset Open source or our internal deployment and customization of the tool.
- Engage with Airbnb’s Superset users - we expect all engineers to be able to drive projects end to end, gather user feedback or collaborate with product managers, create and manage feature roll out plans and migrations.
- Contribute to maintaining a high technical quality bar by identifying quality or architecture improvements projects, improving testability, reviewing other’s code and technical designs.
- Support the team’s operations via lightweight on-call support.
- Lead investment into new technical areas within the analytics space (beyond Apache Superset), to further enable efficient data-informed decision making.
Your Expertise:
- 9+ years of full-time, relevant industry experience, with expertise in building backend services in Python.
- Expertise with frontend development - HTML, CSS, Typescript, Javascript and modern front-end frameworks such as React is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with big data technology is a plus, e.g: Flink, Airflow, Hadoop, Spark, Trino, etc.
- Experience in some combination of internal application development, data infrastructure, and analytics engineering is a plus.
- Appetite for high quality code and robust systems.
- Ability to drive cross functional projects or migrations - including alignment, collaboration and roll out with partner teams and users.
- Passion for building interactive and delightful user experiences and engaging with users.
