Distillery and Warehouse Operations Manager
JOB DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTION: Supervise the production of the spirits made at the distillery and are responsible for the final products and the quality. The Distillery and Warehouse Operations Manager is responsible for a variety of leadership and administrative tasks as well as ensuring that the routine operation of the distillery continues successfully. This role includes overseeing distillation production and warehousing of the distilled product.
POSITION TYPE: Salaried, Full Time: 40+ hours per week Shift: 8:00 am - 5 pm. Availability for frequent off-shift and weekend support for the distillers and cooks.
PRIMARY DUTIES: Primary duties daily tasks will include:
- Manage the distillery staff and supervise product safety throughout the distilling process.
- Oversees Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP) – Distillery & Barrel Warehousing.
- Manages the distilling team and plans staff training and development for a range of duties, including distillery functions like mashing and fermenting and administrative functions such as TTB reporting.
- Responsible for driving improvement at a distillery. Must constantly look for new ways to improve production processes, the quality of the beverages being produced, and the efficiency of the distillery.
- This distillery operations manager must be capable of leading staff and appropriately directing resources.
- Manage the distillery’s workforce to meet production goals.
- Manage distillery equipment: Will be responsible for ensuring that distillery equipment is used effectively and maintained correctly.
- Monitor costs during the production process.
- Ensure health and safety compliance - ensure the necessary workplace safety regulations are strictly followed.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
- Facilitate the maintenance of equipment.
- Develop the production schedule and supervise the production of new make spirits.
- Oversee proper inventory methods for barrel warehousing and aging.
- Manage 3rd Party production, barrel entry, and barrel pulls.
- Administration tasks: Will record data about the production process and warehousing of spirits. This data is shared with senior management and shared between departments.
- Trains distillers, cooks, and other distillery and warehousing personnel how to effectively perform their jobs at the distillery. Typical areas of training are:
- Mash Bills
- Fermentation process and science
- Yeast physiology
- Testing
- Brix
- PH
- Proof
- Specific gravity
- PG Calculations
- Gauging
- Barrel Filling
- General Duties: Other duties as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry or related Science field, or comparable combination of experience and education.
Experience
- Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Distillation process or related industry experience
- 10 years in the industry is a plus
- Proven record on ability to effectively manage a multi-shift operation.
- Must have strong organizational skills
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Experience in beverage alcohol is a plus
- Knowledge of TTB rules and regulations is a plus
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Ability to manage people effectively, develop capabilities and continuously improve results
- Collaborative work ethic, especially across department lines at all levels in plant operations – influencing effectively with management as well as line staff
- Strong attention to detail and customer service orientation
- Proficiency in SAP and Microsoft Office
- Proficiency in DRAMS is a plus
- Working knowledge of TTB regulations, ISO requirements and Food Safety processes a plus
- Must be able to comprehend cause and effect analysis
- Must be able to understand process flow
