About the role

Description

The Net Zero Industrial Policy Lab at Johns Hopkins is looking for post-doctoral fellow to conduct research on global green industrial policy.

The lab seeks to produce the world-leading academic research and timely policy analysis needed to grapple with geopolitics and political economy of the energy transition. It combines the technical analysis of net-zero supply chains with the study of net-zero industrial policies to catalyze strategic collaborations between government and industry. The lab operates as more than an academic research unit—it works closely with partners from industry and government to develop solutions in real-time. The lab works across sectors with projects in critical minerals, hydrogen, steel, aluminum, biofuels, renewables, and other clean energy supply chains.

The lab is embarking on a multi-year project on the history and practice of global industrial policy. The goal is to do engaged research that will inform multilateral diplomacy and the international financial institutions. This work will involve:

i.     Conducting historical and theoretical research on earlier efforts to create joint industrial policy such as the European  Coal and Steel Community or the international commodity agreements. 

ii.    Mapping current collaborative efforts to advance industrial policy and clean energy supply chains across international policy domains (trade, finance, security, and development) and developing analytical frameworks to understand and explain this dynamic landscape. 

iii.    Leading policy engagement with foreign policy teams in priority countries, global forums such as the G7, G20, G77, and V20, and the international financial institutions.

 This is a two-year full-time research and engagement position.

 Duties:

 Research (75%)

  • Conduct data collection and historical research on global green industrial policy.
  • Liaise with domain experts to synthesize key insights and recommendations across international policy domains (trade, finance, security, and development). 
  • Co-author peer-reviewed academic papers, policy briefs, and analytic reports.
  • Co-author grants and funding proposals.

 Engagement (20%)

  • Participate in meetings with lab partners, foreign policy teams, and global forums to explain and disseminate research.
  • Prepare slide decks and other briefing materials as needed.
  • Participate in the design and preparation for webinars, workshops, and engagement sessions.

 Professionalization and Administration (5%)

  • Attend conferences and events on to present your research and the research of the lab.
  • Take courses to build necessary skills.
  • Attend lab meetings and take active part in internal discussions.
  • Support the industrial policy lead with administrative tasks such as preparing budgets, booking meetings, and organizing the industrial base team. 

Qualifications

A PhD in political science, public policy, or economics.

Salary Range

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting.  Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range.  The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.
