PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The purpose of this job is to prepare and analyze financial information to provide accurate and useful information to management for review and provide insight to management to help in overall decision making. This position exists to ensure accounting processes and financial statements are completed thoroughly and accurately, while aligning with Company standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepares and analyzes financial statements and reports.
- Prepares income and balance sheet statements, consolidated statements and various other accounting statements and reports.
- Analyzes financial reports and records, makes recommendations relative to the accounting of reserves, assets, and expenditures.
- Conducts special studies and develops or recommends new or improved methods and procedures.
- Reviews general ledger accounts and prepares journal entries.
- Identifies, researches, resolves, and follows up on problems and opportunities generated by the reconciliation of accounts including any inefficiency of department policies and procedures.
- Maintains and manages assigned section of the statutory financial statements.
Completes statements and reports for Division of Insurance (DOI) and State Agencies
- Accurately passes internal information to state agencies and works with them to make sure we complete all requirements.
- Develops processes to make sure all information needed by states is available.
- Works with internal departments to gather all information needed for state reports and state exams.
Conducts reconciliations and resolves discrepancies.
- Demonstrates effective communication and problem-solving skills to help improve department.
- Reviews and verifies the accuracy of journal entries and accounting classifications assigned to various records.
- Assembles, creates, and reconciles month-end accounting entries resolving discrepancies.
- Prepares asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
Conducts general accounting assignments and makes recommendations to improve security of financial information.
- Maintains accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
- Upholds financial security by following internal controls.
- Participates in various department-wide initiatives and manages projects as requested.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This role does not have supervisory responsibilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university preferred with a major or emphasis in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Minimum 5 years of related experience in Accounting; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
None required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Working knowledge of General Accounting, Accounts Payable (A/P), Accounts Receivable (A/R) and/or in an entry-level accountant role, required. Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) regulations. Proven ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and interact effectively with management, employees, and auditors. Must have the ability to convey complex financial information to non-financial users. Ability to work independently and meet stringent deadlines. Organizational ability to collect, analyze, and summarize data and to prepare clear and concise reports. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications.
