About the role

Job Summary


Position can be based in either Webster, MA/Boston, MA or within a commutable distance, preferred. Can be remote.

 

The Director, Actuarial is accountable for spearheading and overseeing our Actuarial Rating Systems team (Earnix). Responsible for managing our front-end rating algorithms well as our rules engine which drives filter methodologies and paper application requirements of both auto and home lines of business.
 

Must be able to interact with Sr. Leadership at all levels and provide updates. Strong project management skills and interaction with other areas such as IT.  In addition, responsible for managing and developing a team of 7+ which includes managers and actuaries.

 

As team members will require knowledge and skills to carry out the analyses, the Director, will provide training and/or other sources of knowledge (internal or external) as necessary. To the extent that team members have a desire to advance toward CAS credentials or a management position, the Director should provide support and/or training as needed.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Bachelor's Degree or professional level of knowledge in specialized field or equivalent related experience.
· 10–12 years of experience with increasing responsibility in related roles
· Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, either SAS or SQL
· Thorough knowledge of insurance operations, accounting, and regulations
· Knowledge of IT systems, policy admin/claims adjustment processes
· Extensive experience carrying out complicated quantitative analyses for insurance companies or similar organizations; preferably with products similar to MAPFRE’s
· Extensive experience with managing new and existing data sources, as well as building complex processes off of them from scratch
· Thorough knowledge of applicable industry practices, standards, and concepts
· Thorough knowledge of reinsurance and its implications on the area of focus, capital management and risk management
· Ability to use these skills to modify existing processes or innovate new processes

Preferred
· ACAS Credential or MBA
· 4+years of experience managing a team of actuarial employees
· Experience with Earnix, R, or Insure Quote preferred for pricing area of focus

· Works effectively as a team leader within the actuarial area and as an integral member (or leader, where applicable) of cross-functional teams
· Makes decisions related to a wide variety of situations, while also defining the decision authority given to team members

· Proactive in recognizing existing or emerging problems with analysis processes and using project management skills to remediate the issues
· Ability to evaluate the department’s performance (and one’s own) with an open mind in the face of organizational changes
· Effectively utilizes cost/benefit analysis to determine if changes are appropriate
· Provide training and guidance to less experienced staff, as well as lead them in team projects
· Manages internal and external relationships
· Manages process changes with internal and external stakeholders
· Ability to communicate and negotiate with senior management and external personnel
· Takes an active interest in career development of employees
