About the role

The Clinical Research Nurse will work independently to support studies in the Human Imaging Core and the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. The incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of nursing care for research and clinical patients who are being evaluated on radiology scanners and/or participating in research studies conducted by or in conjunction with the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. 

  • Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe care to patients within the department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging
  • Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team including nurses, technologists, physicians, scientists, research coordinators, graduate students, pharmacists, and lab technicians from within radiology as well as other departments across UCSF
  • Carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required
  • Carries out research duties as required including maintaining integrity of protocol implementation, accurate data collection and coordination, and coordination with other research staff to ensure continuity of care of participants
  • Ensures patients are safely screened for radiology procedures including MRI and Nuclear Medicine scans
  • Provides clear and detailed education to patients regarding their procedures and any necessary prep instructions 
  • Provides direction to other team members regarding patient safety and protocol adherence 
  • Maintains knowledge of a wide array of research protocols, particularly in regards to nursing tasks and patient safety

Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe care to patients and therapeutic care. 

 

Carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required including Vital Sign Collection, EKG collection, Blood collection, History and Physical, Patient Assessments, Urinalysis, IV Placement, Central Line Access, Patient Positioning, Patient education, medication administration, etc. 

 

Carries out research duties as required including maintaining integrity of protocol implementation, accurate data collection and coordination, and coordination with other research staff to ensure continuity of care of participants.

 

Performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision. 

 

Provides clear and detailed education to patients regarding their procedures and any necessary prep instructions.

 

Assists with the management of patient care administered on imaging scanners within the Department of Radiology and research studies conducted by or in conjunction with the department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. 

 

Screens patients to ensure there is no contraindication to the imaging and for general patient safety. Ensures patients are safely screened for radiology procedures including MRI and Nuclear Medicine scans.

 

Maintains proper stocks of drugs, supplies, etc.

 

Provides direction to other team members regarding patient safety and protocol adherence 

 

Maintains knowledge of a wide array of research protocols, particularly in regards to nursing tasks and patient safety.

Functions independently in a clinical research setting and be responsible for the complete coordination of assigned clinical research activities and must possess full knowledge and understanding of all assigned clinical protocols.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of RN experience
  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience in hospital inpatient, emergency department, or infusion center
  • Ability to communicate well with other team members, research groups, clinical staff, patients, and their families
  • Willingness to provide assistance to other team members when needed
  • Excellent Attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to safely work in close proximity to MRI, CT, PET, and SPECT scanners as well as radiopharmaceuticals
  • Ability to safely set up equipment for procedures and position patient on the scanner table
  • Ability coordinate tasks among a variety of studies and multiple patients
  • Strong IV skills
  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates appropriate research procedures for a patient and research subjects
  • Directs others in the delivery of patient care, as appropriate and holds staff accountable for completion of delegated tasks
  • Completes a nursing history that includes patient and family medical history, psychosocial, cultural factors, nutritional and special needs of the patient's physical status within department timeframes
