Overview

The Communication Advisor performs all functions related to coordinating OCPO publications, newsletters, events, and community engagement efforts. The role provides event coordination and editorial support to the Dallas Community Police Oversight Board (CPOB), cultivates relationships with internal and external partners, and works on community outreach initiatives.

The Communication Advisor works with initiative and meticulous follow-through under general guidance.

Essential Functions

1 Build a coalition with existing groups/initiatives working on police reform.

2 Develop positive relationships with partners and decision-makers, including elected officials and law enforcement.

3 Partner with Community Organizers to incorporate and uplift voices from impacted communities through outreach events.

4 Research successful police reforms and oversight models from other jurisdictions across the country.

5 Facilitate discussions with stakeholders to brainstorm initiatives and establish prioritized goals.

6 Develop a strategic plan with timelines, resources, and deliverables, including a press, social media, and outreach strategy.

7 Manage the implementation of the communication plan, using strong influence and communication skills.

8 Direct external communications for OCPO, including web and social media presence, press/media relations, and event publicity.

9 Collaborate with program staff on policy and legislative advocacy, as well as training development.

10 Draft and coordinate the yearly OCPO newsletter publication.

11 Host or assist at community and OCPO-related events as needed.

12 May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others. For example, volunteers and interns.

12 Strong organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and exercise independent judgment.

13 Ability to prepare clear, concise reports and written materials.

14 Ability to write accurate narratives based on observations and interviews.

15 Ability to note and remember significant details, including descriptions of events and individuals.

16 Ability to analyze problems and identify common elements for resolution.

Preferred Skills

1 Familiarity with the Dallas community, its diverse populations, and its history of community-law enforcement relations.

2 Experience working within a civilian oversight agency or public sector organization focused on law enforcement or public accountability.

3 Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

A Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Communications, Public Policy, or a communications-related field from an accredited college or university.
