About the role

This position will serve as the Waterfront Director for 4-H Camp Owahta, an overnight summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Cortland County, located in McGraw, New York. The primary responsibility of this position is to further the mission of camp through the planning and delivery of programs on the camp’s waterfront that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the camper’s age and abilities. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: overseeing and coordinating 4-H Camp Owahta’s waterfront and swimming activities, maintaining the standards that lead to a quality program, and maintaining the waterfront facilities including daily inspections, set up and tear down, and general upkeep. This position will operate waterfront programs in compliance with the American Red Cross requirements for water safety. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned and deemed appropriate by the 4-H Camp Owahta Director and/or Camp Manager. (NOTE: This position does not include regular cabin responsibilities, but it is possible it could include occasional cabin responsibilities.)

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a full-time exempt position, 100% FTE. The summer salary for this position is $4,000.00.

Sponsorship for employment visa status is not available for this position.

POSITION INFORMATION:

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must have a minimum of: one (1) season experience as a camp aquatics director at a NYS camp OR two (2) seasons experience consisting of at least 12 weeks as a children’s camp lifeguard at a waterfront beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising at a time OR 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard at a waterfront beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising at a time.
  • Must have American Red Cross Lifeguard Supervision and Management Certification, or equivalent certification approved by NYS Department of Health (will assist with re-certification if necessary).
  • Must have current American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard Certification, or equivalent certification approved by NYS Department of Health.
  • Must have current NYS Department of Health approved cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications (will train if necessary).
  • Must have current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification, or equivalent certification approved by NYS Department of Health (will assist with re-certification if necessary).
  • Desire, ability and willingness to work and live in a camp community and to reside at 4-H Camp Owahta, McGraw, NY (including overnights) the entire time 4-H Camp is in session.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which will include evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervising or leadership experience, preferably on the waterfront.
  • Demonstrated ability and desire to work with children and young adults indoors and outdoors.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to one’s peer group.
  • Demonstrated ability to accept guidance and supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach skills to other staff members and campers of all ages.
  • Good character, integrity, adaptability, and resiliency skills during adverse situations.
  • Experience working with youth of all ages.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Job Responsibilities - 95%

1.      Plan, direct, and supervise a safe and fun waterfront program.

  • Write (with the help of waterfront lifeguards) lesson plans that meet camp goals.
  • Assess 4-H camper swim levels upon their arrival at 4-H Camp Owahta and assign to appropriate American Red Cross swim levels.
