About the role

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Saginaw Public Schools Special Education Teacher Paraprofessionals must have the ability to accept supervision and direction, also the ability to work creatively and skillfully with students.  The paraprofessional must have the physical stamina for lifting and movement of an ambulatory student.  The Paraprofessional should exhibit emotional stability and good judgement in making decisions.  Paraprofessionals are responsible for assisting in the supervision and instruction of a special education classroom and/or special education student(s), under the supervision of a teacher.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the supervision of the teacher
  2. Support instructional activities with students under the direction of the classroom teacher.
  3. Provide appropriate health/hygiene related by assisting students with personal care needs, including toileting, diaper changing, changing clothing, and providing catheter-related assistance in accordance with established care plans, school policies, and applicable health and safety procedures.
  4. Confer with the teacher, as requested, in evaluating student(s) progress, coordinating tests and homework assignments, and/or implementing IEP objectives
  5. Assist in implementing behavioral plans indicated by the IEP
  6. Instruct special education student(s) one-on-one or in small groups to assist the teacher in implementing goals for remediation of student deficiencies and ensuring student success.
  7. Monitor student's activities and behavior.
  8. Monitor special education student(s) during lunch, recess, field trips or as designated by the teacher to ensure a safe and positive learning environment
  9. Perform record keeping and clerical functions as needed
  10. Assist in the feeding of assigned student(s) as needed
  11. Report observations and incidents relating to specific students concerning unacceptable behavior
  12. Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns
  13. Assist other staff as required to ensure an efficient and effective learning environment
  14. Perform other duties as assigned
