The Pharmacy Technician – Central Inpatient supports one of Cleveland Clinic's highest-volume inpatient pharmacies, serving a wide range of service lines including general inpatient care, oncology, sterile products, the operating room, and pediatrics. As part of a collaborative pharmacy team, caregivers rotate through multiple operational areas, gaining experience in medication preparation and distribution, medication deliveries throughout Main Campus, automated carousel operations, phone triage, and management of the MAR messaging system to support inpatient care teams. This role is highly active, requiring frequent travel throughout the hospital, and offers extensive cross-training opportunities. Upon successful completion of training and demonstrated competencies, caregivers may have the opportunity to transfer into one of several specialized pharmacy areas, including IV services, ambulatory pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, and home care, based on departmental needs.
A caregiver in this position will work rotating day and evening shifts, including 6:45am–3:15pm and 2:00pm–10:30pm. Caregivers typically work three weeks on day shift followed by one week on evening shift, though some may work a consistent evening schedule based on departmental needs. Every third weekend is required.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Prepare medications through selecting, labeling, repacking, non-sterile compounding and sterile compounding.
Deliver medications to the appropriate storage locations in an accurate and timely manner.
Maintain accurate and appropriate inventories of medications and supplies and complete inventory audits, such as cycle counts and nursing unit inspections.
Maintain a safe and clean work area by complying with procedures, rules and regulations, and document regulatory requirements such as temperature logs, scheduled activities and training.
Use information systems, technology and automation to complete assigned tasks.
Assist with the training of pharmacy caregivers and students.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma/GED
Six months of related experience
Upon hire, must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National HealthCareer Association (NHA).
Upon hire, it is required to hold an active registration through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) as either a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician, or Pharmacy Technician Trainee.
Caregivers with active Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Registered Pharmacy Technician registrations are required to update their registration to a Certified Pharmacy Technician registration with the OBOP within 6 months.
