About the role

The Team:

On Ward 2A General Medicine we are a close-knit team.  We are based at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH), our state’s largest acute centre, Level 2 A block. Ward 2A is an Acute Medical ward with a wide variety of patients. It’s an exciting and rewarding place to work, featuring contemporary, evidence-informed practice that has people at the centre. The Nurse Unit Manager on 2A provides leadership to a diverse team who work in an adaptive model of care including Assistants in Nursing, Ward Aides, Enrolled Nurses, Registered Nurses, Associate Nurse Unit Managers and a Clinical Nurse Consultant. The Nurse Unit Manager on 2A also works closely with the multidisciplinary team including but not limited to Medical Staff, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists to facilitate the Evidence Based Geographic Model of care. 

The Role:

The Nurse Unit Manager works autonomously at unit/ward level under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) - Acute Medical Services to provide direction and leadership to Ward 2A and is responsible and accountable for the following:

  • Ensuring the standards of patient/client care within the practice area are in accordance with relevant legislation, clinical standards and evidence based practice.
  • Ensuring the provision of nursing care that meets the care requirements of each patient/client in the practice area.
  • Managing physical, financial and human resources effectively, ensuring the practice area objectives are met.
  • Working collaboratively to support a learning organisation encouraging and supporting staff to develop further knowledge and skills to enhance the individual and the practice area.
  • Providing clear direction to staff, so that all staff have an understanding of their responsibilities and duties.
  • Ensuring that quality improvement processes are in place and acted upon, resulting in constant evaluation and improvement in the standard of care to patients/clients.
  • Acting as a role model for staff by actively coaching/mentoring/developing staff.
  • Developing collaborative relationships with stakeholders and ensuring mechanisms are in place to support consumer advocacy.
  • Actively participating in personal and professional development activities.
  • Contributing to the expansion of knowledge and ideas in the relevant field by supporting and participating in research and translating evidence into practice.
  • Champion a child safe culture that upholds the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.   • Where applicable, exercise delegations in accordance with a range of Acts, Regulations, Awards, administrative authorities and functional arrangements as mandated by Statutory office holders including the Secretary and Head of State Service. The relevant Unit Manager can provide details to the occupant of delegations applicable to this position. 
  • Comply at all times with policy and protocol requirements, including those relating to mandatory education, training and assessment.

You will need:

Details of appointment:

Fixed term, full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing May 2026 for a period of up to twelve (12) months.
