Overview
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center unites individualized care and advanced research to provide the latest cancer treatment options while accelerating discoveries that prevent, treat and cure cancer and infectious diseases worldwide.
Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is an independent, nonprofit organization and the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington. We have earned a global reputation for our track record of discoveries in cancer, infectious disease and basic research, including important advances in bone marrow transplantation, immunotherapy, HIV/AIDS prevention and COVID-19 vaccines. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services. Fred Hutch also serves as UW Medicine’s cancer program.

Fred Hutch’s Philanthropy program raises funds for cancer and related disease research, care, and education to help Fred Hutch become the world’s best cancer center. Since the April 2022 merger that led to the formation of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Fred Hutch has served as the cancer program for UW Medicine, and Philanthropy is proud to raise funds that fuel the adult oncology program on behalf of both Fred Hutch and UW Medicine.
Following board approval of an ambitious, 10-year comprehensive campaign, our team of more than 110 will grow to more than 150 over the next three years. Philanthropy staff implement high-performing, relationship-based fundraising programs that engage and inspire thousands of supporters who are passionate about preventing and eliminating cancer and infectious disease. Our FY24 goals include nearly doubling our annual fundraising, deepening our patient family fundraising, and advancing the first phase of our comprehensive campaign through Fred Hutch’s 50th anniversary in 2025. The Director, Philanthropic Gifts reports to Executive Director, Philanthropic Gifts and serves on the department’s Philanthropic Gifts team. The Director will take initiative, work independently, and collaborate with team members across the institution. In addition, they will maintain professionalism, show flexibility, handle multiple tasks and changing priorities, and remain composed under the pressure of deadlines. Some travel and weekend and evening work will be required.
This position is a hybrid role with a minimum 2 days per week at our South Lake Union campus.
Responsibilities
- Persuasively articulate the mission and goals of Fred Hutch and translate complex science and clinical priorities to inspire gifts and grants
- Meet annual revenue goals and other key performance metrics including but not limited to funds raised, numbers of proposal submitted, number of gifts closed, number of substantive communications with donors, number of donors qualified or disqualified
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects capable of gifts at $100,000+
- Create and strengthen relationships with donors using data-driven identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship methodologies
- Facilitate meaningful interactions for donors and prospects with faculty, as well as administrative and volunteer leadership, including the President and Director, Board of Directors, and Board of Advisors, as appropriate
- Align solicitation strategies with Fred Hutch goals for operations, research, patient supportive services, education initiatives, and new initiatives of the strategic plan
- Participate in a robust schedule of in-person and virtual events and represent Fred Hutch in the community

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- A minimum of seven years of professional experience in, fundraising, business
