Job Summary

The Kitchen Assistant supports daily food service operations by assisting with meal preparation, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and ensuring compliance with food safety regulations. This role is responsible for following established kitchen procedures and contributing to the efficient operation of the food service area.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Kitchen Operations

  • Assist in daily food preparation and meal service.
  • Follow established procedures and protocols for kitchen operations.
  • Prepare, cook, and serve meals according to planned menus.
  • Ensure food safety and hygiene standards are met, including proper food storage and handling.
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen and dining area before and after each meal.

 

Food Inventory and Ordering

  • Assist with monitoring kitchen inventory and restocking supplies as needed.
  • Organize food and kitchen supplies to ensure efficient operations.
  • Minimize waste by following portion control and proper storage guidelines.

Compliance and Safety

  • Follow health and safety regulations, including ServSafe guidelines.
  • Maintain proper documentation related to food safety and sanitation as directed.
  • Report any safety concerns or equipment malfunctions to the Kitchen Supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with basic record-keeping related to kitchen operations.
  • Participate in required training and professional development activities.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience and Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1–3 years of experience in food services or a related field preferred.
  • ServSafe certification required or ability to obtain for continued employment.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements

  • Basic understanding of food preparation, handling, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively as part of a team.

Working Conditions

  • Moderate noise level in a kitchen environment.
  • Exposure to hot surfaces, kitchen equipment, and food-related hazards.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 20 lbs independently or up to 70 lbs with assistance.
  • Occasional interaction with vendors and delivery personnel.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Use of hands for food preparation, handling, and kitchen equipment operation.
  • Ability to reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as required in a kitchen setting.
  • Must be able to transport food items and supplies as needed.
