Summary

Interested in a hands-on technical role that combines physical security, low-voltage systems, and IT infrastructure? The City of Boise is seeking an IT Physical Security Specialist to support the technology that helps secure City facilities. 

This is a long-term temporary position working up to 19 hours per week, making it an excellent opportunity for someone looking to supplement their current employment or continue working in the security technology field on a flexible schedule.

This is not a traditional IT support or help desk role. Instead, you'll work with enterprise access control, CCTV, video management, and other electronic security systems by assisting with installations, hardware replacements, troubleshooting, maintenance, and technology projects across City facilities. Candidates with backgrounds in low-voltage systems, electronic security, alarm installation, facilities technology, technical field service, or related technical trades are encouraged to apply.

Working alongside experienced IT Physical Security staff and the City's Security team, you'll help maintain reliable security infrastructure, support system upgrades, coordinate with contractors, and contribute to projects that enhance the safety and security of City employees, facilities, and the public.

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • Associate’s degree in electronic technology, information technology, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with IT systems, technical support, or security technology.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Basic understanding of physical security concepts (access control, cameras, video storage, etc.).
    • Basic familiarity of electronic principles (AC/DC voltages, Ohm’s Law, use of digital multimeter, and hand tools).
    • Basic familiarity with IT infrastructure (networks, servers, cabling, databases, or desktop support).
Licensing And Other Requirements
  • Valid state-issued driver's license.

  • Applicants must be able to pass:
    • City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
    • Driving Record Check
    • Transportation Security Administration background check (SIDA)
    • Boise Police Department Criminal Justice Information System Background Check (BPD CJIS)

Examples of duties

Handles moderately complex issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff. Is capable of performing all duties and provides team support and training, as needed.

Security Systems Support and Maintenance - Provides daily support for access control, cameras, digital video storage, and related security technologies using Dynamics365 and project/task tracking software. Assists with routine maintenance, system checks, and life-cycle replacement of security hardware and software. Helps troubleshoot basic security-related technical issues and completes and/or coordinates repairs with vendors. Removes and replaces door access control components and ensure functionality of the door upon completion. Updates and maintains technical documentation, procedures, and support materials. Supports end-users by assisting with software setup, access requests, and small configuration changes. Participates in training sessions and learns to provide basic technology instruction to City staff.

Project Assistance - Assists senior staff with security technology projects and upgrades. Interprets and follows project plans and schematics for new buildings or retrofits. Helps gather requirements, prepare basic documentation, and track project activ
