Job Purpose/Overview

Mars Science & Diagnostics (SDx) is dedicated to building an innovative organization that brings to bear products and services that help pets stay healthy longer and support the people that love and care for them - from pet professionals to pet owners.   Science & Diagnostics embodies the Mars Petcare Purpose, to Make a Better World for Pets, by using science and technology to advance preventive health, early and precision diagnostics, and monitoring for pets.

The SDx division is made up of our global diagnostics business (Antech), Genomics businesses (Wisdom and Antegene), our pharmacy distribution / data and technology services business (Vetsource), and the Waltham Pet Science Institute (advancing pet nutrition and health through scientific research).  The Antech business consists in multiple product / service lines across the diagnostics spectrum, including lab services (e.g. Reference Lab in chemistry, hematology, anatomic pathology), medical devices (i.e. point of care diagnostics and imaging equipment), and tele-health service (i.e., radiology), and AI services (i.e., Rapid Read).

Given our industry (one of the most regulated in the Mars portfolio), business and environmental context are highly matrixed, globally diverse covering NA, EU/APAC (rapidly growing markets), we are seeking a candidate who can work in complexity and high-pace of change.

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Associate General Counsel to serve as a key legal advisor to the President and the senior leadership team. This role will sit on the Global SDx LT and expected to not only contribute to functional matters but enterprise business strategy and goals.

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing a wide range of legal matters across our global operations, providing expert counsel to in all legal matters, including regulatory responsibilities in pharmacy, animal health, diagnostics service, and broadly health science matters. This is a senior leadership role that requires a strong business acumen and the ability to provide practical, solutions-oriented legal advice in a fast-paced, global and matrixed environment.

The Target Pay Range for this position is $305,00-$382,000 annually. At SDx/Antech, pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, education, training and budget.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • People Leadership: This role will manage a direct team of 4 legal professionals, including being responsible for hiring, managing, and mentoring

  • Manage legal team to support the business operations to provide accurate and comprehensive legal advice and recommendations

  • Provides legal counsel to senior leadership of the Company, on all matters that affect the Company, including providing risk assessment and guidance

  • Manages material litigation and other disputes

  • Supports corporate governance and regulatory and compliance matters for the Company.

  • Responsible for the selection, retention, management, evaluation, and optimization of all outside legal counsel

  • Participates in the development, review and/or implementation of company-wide policies and procedures

  • Maintains awareness of current and applicable developments in the legal and regulatory landscape; continually reviewing and analyzing legal risks, opportunities and trends that could impact company’s business

  • Leads negotiation and drafting of material contracts, including acquisition, investment, manufacturing, license, development, purchasing, logistics, consulting, and other agreements

  • Ensures the production of accurate and well documented research, analysis and recommendations for legal and regulatory issues and inquiries made by management

  • Supports management and operations teams with wide-ranging initiatives, including strategic partnership and merger and acquisition activities
