About the role

The Laboratory Microbiology Supervisor oversees the Microbiology section within the Clinical Laboratory, ensuring all microbiological testing and analyses are performed accurately, timely, and comply with hospital and regulatory standards. This role supervises Microbiology staff, manages daily operations, and supports departmental goals through effective leadership, coaching and resource allocation.

  • Ensures day to day operations of the Microbiology department are maintained and completed in a timely manner in accordance with hospital and departmental policies.  Leads staff in day to day functions of the department providing guidance and support as needed.  Demonstrates problem-solving, critical thinking, and prioritization of work to resolve issues as they arise in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Performs accurate and timely microbiological testing, including cultures, identification and susceptibility assays. Adheres to quality control policies, documenting all QC activities, instrument calibrations, and media validations. Conducts daily charge reconciliation and reviews microbiology logs for accuracy. Ensures prompt distribution of test results to clinical teams in compliance with laboratory standards.
  • Actively engages in continuous improvement of microbiology processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Ensures adherence to turnaround time (TAT) standards for STAT and routine microbiology tests to support timely clinical decisions. Maintains strict compliance with Infection Control protocols, HIPAA regulations, and all relevant microbiology-related regulatory requirements.
  • Empathizes with patient and patient support systems, expresses compassion and understanding for the situation and demonstrates care which is appropriate for the age, and cultural, religious, gender identity, or ethnic background.  Engages in caring behaviors, taking conscious ownership for work and takes deliberate/thoughtful actions regarding how to best carry out interactions with the patient, families, physicians, and co-workers.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing levels.  Responsible for scheduling/staffing, coaching, training, hiring, firing, counseling, performance evaluations and competencies, and payroll process. Effectively supervises staff in compliance with applicable regulatory bodies, and all established policies, procedures and legal guidelines.
  • Collaborates with staff and members of the healthcare team, ensuring the coordination of care between other disciplines and support staff.  Delegates laboratory activities to appropriate members of the healthcare team, provides effective leadership and ensures that service is safe and of high quality.  Acts as a source of information and articulately responds to questions, providing resources, guidance, and education about laboratory services.

Southern Cali Hospital Culver City

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or Biological Science (or equivalent)
  • Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license with specialization or extensive experience in Microbiology or Clinical Microbiologist Scientist (CMS) License
  • Minimum four years of Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Clinical Microbiologist Scientist experience
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and customer service skills suited for managing a technical team within a hospital setting.
  • Ability to maintain productivity and quality under varying workload and flexible shifts.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and verbal)
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including covering PTO/sick days
  • Ability to distinguish colors

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree
  • Two (2) years in a supervisory position
  • Significant Microbiology exposure

Pay Rate: Min - $113,400  | Max - $155,950
