We are looking for a dynamic individual with editorial and publishing expertise to lead Cell Host & Microbe, the well-established, premier Cell Press journal covering microbiological research.

Cell Press has successfully published journals for 5 decades and is still expanding into new products and new disciplines.  Cell Host & Microbe is part of the vibrant Cell Press portfolio of scientific journals. Launched in 2007, Cell Host & Microbe is the leading destination for cutting edge microbiology, virology and parasitology research.

About the Role:

The Editor in Chief is a leadership role with responsibility for all editorial aspects of the journal. This includes managing the globally-dispersed, in-house, scientific editorial team, overseeing the evaluation of submissions and ensuring the quality and quantity of articles published in the journal, and formulating, developing, implementing and evaluating a journal strategy and editorial direction that ensures Cell Host & Microbe remains topical, distinctive, impactful and agenda-setting. The Editor in Chief also has responsibilities for supporting the development of the broader Cell Press journal portfolio, forming effective partnerships with colleagues in our Operations, Marketing and Strategy teams, as well as with other editorial teams at Cell Press.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead and shape an impactful journal serving the microbiology community and play a senior role in the vibrant and growing Cell Press journal portfolio. 

Cell Press has editorial offices in the US (Cambridge MA), UK (Oxford and London), The Netherlands (Amsterdam), Germany (Munich), China (Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen) and India (Delhi and Chennai). There is an advantage in being located near one of these offices; we may be able to support flexible working.

Responsibilities

• Leading, managing and developing the editorial team; recruiting, mentoring, and empowering team members

• Managing day-to-day operations at the journal

• Rigorously evaluating submissions against the Cell Host & Microbe’s high standards

• Building global networks and commissioning world-leading submissions (including insightful front matter articles)

• Shaping and implementing a journal strategy that ensures Cell Host & Microbe remains topical, distinctive, impactful, and a premier destination for the community

• Collaborating with Cell Press colleagues to broaden our footprint and ensure we continue to meet the needs of the research communities we serve

• Supporting and leading strategic projects spanning Cell Press

• Represent Cell Host & Microbe and the wider Cell Press titles in the communities we serve

• Collaborate with other journal teams to build a vibrant and welcoming microbiology ecosystem experience for our authors

• Traveling to participate in domestic & international conferences and visit top research institutes to engage with researchers

Requirements

• Biological Sciences degree

• 3+ years of editorial experience

• Proven successful senior editorial & research experience relevant to Cell Host & Microbe

• Proven ability in influencing the journal’s research community, with an existing strong top-level global network

• Possess a passion for microbiology across the scope of the journal

• Proven excellence in interpersonal, communication and people management skills

• Proven people leadership and collaboration skills
