About the role

About Abridge

Abridge was founded in 2018 with the mission of powering deeper understanding in healthcare. Our AI-powered platform was purpose-built for medical conversations, improving clinical documentation efficiencies while enabling clinicians to focus on what matters most—their patients.

Our enterprise-grade technology transforms patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time, with deep EMR integrations. Powered by Linked Evidence and our purpose-built, auditable AI, we are the only company that maps AI-generated summaries to ground truth, helping providers quickly trust and verify the output. As pioneers in generative AI for healthcare, we are setting the industry standards for the responsible deployment of AI across health systems.

We are a growing team of practicing MDs, AI scientists, PhDs, creatives, technologists, and engineers working together to empower people and make care make more sense. We have offices located in the Mission District in San Francisco, the SoHo neighborhood of New York, and East Liberty in Pittsburgh.

Payroll Manager

Abridge is seeking a Payroll Manager to help manage and scale our payroll operations to meet the tremendous growth of the company. The Payroll Manager will be responsible for all aspects of payroll — administered through Rippling — ensuring accurate and timely processing. The ideal candidate brings strong multi-state payroll expertise, deep compliance experience, solid accounting knowledge, and a proactive approach to process improvement, helping to maintain efficient financial operations and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

This is a hybrid role 3 days/week in San Francisco.

What You’ll Do

Process & Manage Payroll (Rippling)

  • Administer full-cycle payroll for all employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Collaborate with People Ops to manage the payroll components of employee benefits programs such as health, dental, vision insurance, retirement plans, and other company-sponsored benefits.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for payroll inquiries.

  • Prepare and maintain accurate records for internal and external audits and assist with compliance audits as needed.

  • Maintain and update payroll records, generating reports for auditing and compliance.

  • Implement EOR services for ex-US payroll flexibility as a precursor to the global payroll process.

  • Perform backup duties in portions of the Stock Administration.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Serve as the payroll system administrator for Rippling, ensuring data integrity between HRIS, payroll, and accounting integrations.

  • Lead payroll-related process improvements and automation initiatives to enhance accuracy and efficiency.

  • Create dashboards and reports for Finance and People Ops leadership to support analytics and decision-making.

  • Implement scalable processes as the company expands, including international/EOR readiness.

  • Work cross functionally with teams to collate and analyze commissions and bonus tracking.

Payroll Accounting & Reconciliation

  • Prepare and review payroll journal entries for Finance to post in the general ledger, ensuring proper coding and alignment with the company structure.

  • Perform preliminary reconciliations between payroll outputs and general ledger accounts, verifying payroll-related liabilities such as wages, taxes, and benefit contributions.

  • Provide accurate data for month-end and quarter-end accruals (e.g., wages, bonuses, commissions, PTO).

  • Coordinate with Accounting to investigate and resolve payroll variances or discrepancies.

  • Support Finance during audits by providing required payroll documentation and reports.

What You’ll Bring

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Exposure to equity compensation and/or non-US payrolls.

  • 5-7 years of combined payroll and accounting experience, preferably with Rippling (or similar payroll platforms).

  • CPP or FPC certification. (nice to have)

Technical & Regulatory Knowledge

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., NetSuite) and Payroll software (e.g. Rippling).

  • Excel/Google Sheets.

  • Working knowledge of federal and multi-state payroll tax requirements.

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and payroll tax regulations.
