About the role

Job Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

At General Motors, our vision is a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion. As the complexity and strategic importance of Controller Hardware, High Voltage Mechatronics, and Vehicle Electronics continue to expand, GM is transforming the way hardware products are launched, industrialized, manufactured, and sustained throughout their lifecycle.

The Hardware Engineer - Manufacturing is responsible for the end-to-end industrialization strategy and manufacturing readiness of Controller and Mechatronic Hardware products across GM's global supply base. This position serves as the primary technical interface between Product Engineering, Supplier Quality, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Cybersecurity to ensure manufacturing processes, automation strategies, digital connectivity, and quality systems are fully established for successful product launches and long-term production.

This role is responsible for driving the transition of GM's electronic hardware supply chain toward Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 manufacturing practices, utilizing advanced automation, digital traceability, artificial intelligence, predictive quality systems, digital twins, and smart factory technologies. Using the Overall Automation Maturity Index (OAMI) framework, this role will partner with suppliers to establish and execute automation roadmaps that enable a target automation maturity score of 4.5 or greater, ensuring manufacturing operations are resilient, scalable, efficient, and competitive.

Location

The selected candidate is expected to report to a GM location (Warren Technical Center or Milford Proving Grounds) at least three times per week. Travel to supplier manufacturing facilities, engineering centers, and GM locations is required to ensure robust industrialization plans, manufacturing readiness activities, automation initiatives, and quality systems are successfully implemented and sustained.

What You'll Do

  • Responsible for developing and executing the manufacturing industrialization strategy for Controller Hardware and Mechatronic Systems from program sourcing through production launch and ongoing manufacturing support.

  • Lead end-to-end industrialization activities for Controller Hardware, including manufacturing design and process development, launch readiness, capacity planning, and production scalability.

  • Drive supplier manufacturing readiness assessments and execution of launch milestones.

  • Establish manufacturing strategies to support current and future Controller and Mechatronic Hardware programs.

  • Ensure manufacturing processes are capable of meeting quality, throughput, cost, safety, and delivery expectations.

  • Assess supplier manufacturing capabilities and identify risks that could impact successful program execution.

  • Lead manufacturing readiness reviews throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Develop and execute supplier automation roadmaps aligned to Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 principles.

  • Drive implementation of Smart Factory technologies.

  • Lead supplier assessments utilizing the Overall Automation Maturity Index (OAMI).

  • Develop strategies to improve supplier automation maturity from manual and semi-automated operations toward Smart Factory and Adaptive Automation environments.

  • Establish measurable milestones and execution plans enabling suppliers to achieve an OAMI score of 4.5 or greater.

  • Drive continuous improvement efforts that advance manufacturing maturity across the supply chain.

  • Execute and strengthen Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) processes across assigned suppliers.

  • Ensure successful completion of PPAP required documentation.

  • Review program progress against key manufacturing and quality milestones.

  • Proactively identify and mitigate launch and production risks.

  • Ensure robust manufacturing processes are established for: Controller and Mechatronic Hardware

  • Partner with suppliers to establish manufacturing processes that support future software-defined vehicle architectures.
