Sports Page Designer

Summary:

MediaNews Group is seeking a skilled and passionate Sports Page Designer to join our team, responsible for crafting dynamic and engaging sports pages. You'll ensure our content is presented with visual flair and journalistic integrity.

What you will do:

• Copy Editing & Headline Writing: Refine sports copy and craft impactful headlines, ensuring accuracy, adherence to house style, and appropriate length for print and digital

• Visual Storytelling: Champion visual narratives by effectively integrating photographs, graphics, illustrations, and typography to create logical, organized, and compelling sports page layouts

• Editorial Collaboration: Regularly consult with sports editors and relevant editorial teams to determine optimal story placement and visual emphasis

• Design & Production Oversight: Communicate closely with HUB leadership on page design and collaborate with prepress and production departments to maintain quality control for print output

• Publication Expertise: Develop an in-depth understanding of the specific sports publication's brand and target audience to inform design decisions

• Ancillary Publication Proofing: Oversee the proofing process for related sports supplements or special sections

• Remote Team Communication: Effectively communicate with remote editors, ensuring seamless collaboration on page production

• Digital Content Management: Produce classified sports pages and, if applicable to the assignment, post content to the web

• Content Curation: Curate, aggregate, and edit information from syndicated sources, news wires, community organizations, and local residents to create the most comprehensive sports publications possible

• High-Level Design Execution: Consistently produce high-quality, professional designs for any assigned sports publication

What you will bring:

• Sports Page Design experience is a must

• Ability to work in a deadline driven environment

• Demonstrate a willingness to quickly learn and master software and platforms specific to the HUB department's design workflows

• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment

• Strong communication skills and problem-solving skills

• Work effective in a remote environment

• 2-4 years newspaper design experience is required

• Proven skills in news judgment, typography, page design, headline hierarchies and editing of stories, graphics and photographs
