About the role

The Summer Intern program provides college students with the opportunity to participate in meaningful projects that contribute to the overall business unit objectives.  In addition to the assigned projects, Interns are given the opportunity to participate in activities that encourage networking with peers, managers, and employees. 

The Research and Development department is looking for students in Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Genomics or related Life Sciences tracks who are motivated to build and expand their real-world skills in a dynamic product development and engineering setting. The R&D Scientist interns will assist with product development and core engineering processes for CooperSurgical’s Genomics products. Interns will work on relevant in-process projects during their time with the company.

Essential Functions & Accountabilities:

  • Assist in hands-on wet lab experiments to evaluate existing genetic testing assays, contributing to assay or process improvements of current product lines or processes.
  • Perform a variety of molecular biology techniques such as amplification of genomic material, preparation of libraries and sequencing of DNA/RNA.
  • Write experiment protocols and technical reports.
  • Assist with data analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Maintain detailed record of experimental procedures and results. 

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience using standard molecular biology laboratory techniques (e.g., pipetting, whole genome amplification, aseptic technique, etc.) to execute experiments. 
  • Proficiency with analysis and problem solving.
  • Ability to utilize common office and web-based software (email, spreadsheets, word processing, presentations) effectively. 
  • Well organized with attention to detail and ability to carry out tasks independently. 
  • Excellent project management, organizational and follow-through skill set. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

 

Work Environment:

  • Divided between office and laboratory work environment, which includes a manufacturing environment. 
  • Position may at times require the employee to work in areas with bloodborne pathogens or where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • Ability to work on-site 5 days a week at the Houston laboratory.
  • At times will entail prolonged sitting in front of a computer. 
  • This is a paid internship. 

 

Experience:

•     Not required; prior Internship experience is a plus.

Education:

  • Current college student, majoring in Molecular Biology, Genomics, or similar Life Sciences related tracks, entering their Junior or Senior year or working towards a post-graduate degree. 
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA or international equivalent.
