The Position: The Principal role is newly created and will report to the Head of the Global Affairs function. The successful candidate will be responsible for conceptualizing and executing government relations strategies focused on the executive branch of the U.S. federal government. The objective is to promote Coupang and advance the company’s policy priorities. This will involve forging and managing relationships with key U.S. executive-branch officials, including officials at the U.S. Department of State, relevant U.S. embassies, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, and on the staff of the National Security Council.

The role will work with a growing government relations team based in Washington, D.C. as well as numerous retail, government relations, legal, communications, and technology professionals based across the globe.

The Principal’s responsibilities will include:

  • Forging and maintaining trusted relationships with key U.S. executive branch officials.
  • Deepening understanding of Coupang’s significance to U.S. governmental economic and technology priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Aligning company policy priorities with those of the U.S. government.
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities to partner with U.S. government agencies to advance mutual priorities.
  • Coordinating with internal Coupang business, legal, and communications teams to craft and refine the company’s policy priorities.
  • Executing all details—no matter how small—of government relations initiatives with the U.S. executive branch.

Experience & Expertise

  • Governmental and/or government affairs experience: 10-15 years of experience in government and/or government affairs involving at least one of the relevant agencies. Prior service in the U.S. executive branch at a relevant agency is preferred.
  • Indo-Pacific, Technology, and/or Trade Policy Expertise: Candidate must exhibit fluency in either U.S. strategy and policy toward the Indo-Pacific region, U.S. technology policy, or U.S. trade policy—preferably all three.
  • Existing Network: Candidate should possess a network of relevant government officials, policy thinkers, and government affairs professionals.
  • High Metabolism: Candidate must demonstrate a “high metabolism” work style. It is essential that a candidate be able to take initiative, make judgments amidst uncertainty, and move with urgency to seize opportunities in a fast-paced environment.

Education & Travel

  • Bachelors degree required. A graduate degree is preferred.
  • Periodic travel to Asia and to Coupang’s offices on the West Coast will be required.

Pay & Benefits

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. At Coupang, your base pay is one part of your total compensation.

The base pay for this position ranges from $151,000/year in our lowest geographic market to $188,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
